Turkey’s ‘Western’ or ‘Muslim’ identity and the AKP’s civilizational discourse
This paper reviews the evolution of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP)’s civilizational outlook vis-à-vis the West as a discursive instrument that justified its Muslim democracy practices as well as its nativist authoritarian practices. The former practice entails that the AKP appear as a Muslim democratic political force, reconciling Islam and democracy, falsifying the Orientalist essentialism prevalent in the West and resolving the crisis in …
Reproducing the Paradigm of Democracy in Turkey: Parochial Democratization in the Decade of Justice and Development Party
Recent democratic performance of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) indicates the dissolution of its original liberal ambiguity in ways that hinder the possibilities of a full-fledged democracy in Turkey. From Shadow-Boxing to Critical Understanding: Some Theoretical Notes on Islamism as a 'Political' Question
By challenging the equation of modernity with the separation of religion and politics and the portrayal of Islam as an essentially 'dysfunctional' religion, this article suggests that if further democratisation is to be achieved in modernising/democratising Muslim countries, Islamism is best studied on a ground other than Islam or religiosity. This article proposes to problematise Islamism solely on the basis of its politics and political stance …
