Tuğçe Erçetin, Emre Erdoğan•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast European and…•2025

This paper scrutinizes the reproduction of fear in the populist discourse of the Justice and Development Party and provides a content analysis of campaign speeches between 2015 and 2018. We posit that the linkage between populism and fear derives from two frames, victimization and blaming, appealing to perceived threat and insecurity that deepens the construction of ‘us-vs-them’ group differentiation. We argue that the AKP’s campaign in the 2015 …

Affective polarization, characterized by animosity and distrust between partisan groups, threatens democratic resilience and social cohesion by fostering social distance, moral superiority, and political intolerance. This study conceptualizes affective polarization as a form of othering that undermines Aristotle’s concept of philia—political friendship—essential for mutual respect and dialogue. Using survey data from 4,006 respondents in Türkiye,…

  • ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, please tell me … ’

    Open Access•Tuğçe Erçetin, Emre Erdoğan•ARTICLE•Turkish Studies•2021

This article aims to explain how the media reproduced populist themes during the campaign for the constitutional referendum in 2017 by examining columns in pro-government newspapers and conducting a content analysis. The findings demonstrate that ‘the people’ were seen as the most significant opposition to the establishment. The ‘us–them’ distinction was mostly used, which was promoted by othering, emphasizing the moral superiority and victimizat…

  • Obscurities of a Referendum Foretold

Open Access•Hasret Dikici Bilgin, Emre Erdoğan•ARTICLE•Review of Middle East Studies•2018

The 2017 referendum marked a transition from an already incongruous parliamentary system to rampant presidentialism and created more conflicts rather than defusing them. Given the extraordinary conditions under which the referendum was held, and the limited time allowed for discussion of its possible ramifications, any effort to analyze the eve and aftermath of the referendum provoked more questions than answers. Why was the referendum held in 20…
