Old Fossils, New Information
Intra-crystalline protein degradation (IcPD) analysis was undertaken on 80 fossil tooth enamel samples from four taxonomic groups (rhinocerotid, suid, equid, bovid) excavated from two archaeological cave sites in Zambia (Twin Rivers and Mumbwa Caves). Seventy-two (90%) of these fossils showed evidence of closed-system behaviour. The fossils’ relative extent of protein degradation between the sites was consistent with their known ages, with sample…
A terrestrial record of climate variation during MIS 11 through multiproxy palaeotemperature reconstructions from Hoxne, UK
A terrestrial (lacustrine and fluvial) palaeoclimate record from Hoxne (Suffolk, UK) shows two temperate phases separated by a cold episode, correlated with MIS 11 subdivisions corresponding to isotopic events 11.3 (Hoxnian interglacial period), 11.24 (Stratum C cold interval), and 11.23 (warm interval with evidence of human presence). A robust, reproducible multiproxy consensus approach validates and combines quantitative palaeotemperature recon…
Mid-Late Quaternary Fluvial Archives near the Margin of the MIS 12 Glaciation in Southern East Anglia, UK
This paper presents an updated geological reconstruction of the Quaternary evolution of the River Thames at its downstream extremities, close to the North Sea coast, based on new data from multi-disciplinary and citizen-science sources. In this area, the interaction of the Thames with the MIS 12 (Anglian) glaciation is an important part of the Quaternary archive. The Anglian ice sheet, which reached parts of north and east London, was responsible…
Local-scale environmental gradients in ‘snail-shell’ stable isotopes from Holocene Jordanian archaeological sites
Reconstructing environments around archaeological sites is complicated by past land management practices and regional-scale climate proxies that can be contradictory and are often located at a distance from the sites themselves. Here we explore environmental information from fossil snail shells which, even when few in number on an archaeological site, may prove invaluable in constructing site-specific data. The palaeoecology of fossil snails and …
Year-old record of Middle and Later Stone Age innovation in an East African tropical forest
The Middle to Later Stone Age transition in Africa has been debated as a significant shift in human technological, cultural, and cognitive evolution. However, the majority of research on this transition is currently focused on southern Africa due to a lack of long-term, stratified sites across much of the African continent. Here, we report a 78,000-year-long archeological record from Panga ya Saidi, a cave in the humid coastal forest of Kenya. Fo…
Well-dated fluvial sequences as templates for patterns of handaxe distribution
The Middle Palaeolithic of the Nejd, Saudi Arabia
The Pleistocene archaeological record of the Arabian Peninsula is increasingly recognized as being of great importance for resolving some of the major debates in hominin evolutionary studies. Though there has been an acceleration in the rate of fieldwork and discovery of archaeological sites in recent years, little is known about hominin occupations in the Pleistocene over vast areas of Arabia. Here we report on the identification of five new Mid…
Orbital-scale climate variability in Arabia as a potential motor for human dispersals
Stratified Pleistocene vertebrates with a new record of a jaguar-sized pantherine (Panthera cf. gombaszogensis) from northern Saudi Arabia
Remote sensing and GIS techniques for reconstructing Arabian palaeohydrology and identifying archaeological sites
The greening of Arabia
Multi-scale Acheulean landscape survey in the Arabian Desert
Epipalaeolithic occupation and palaeoenvironments of the southern Nefud desert, Saudi Arabia, during the Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene
Author: Hilbert, Yamandu H. et al.; Genre: Journal Article; Issued: 2014-10; Title: Epipalaeolithic occupation and palaeoenvironments of the southern Nefud desert, Saudi Arabia, during the Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene
Middle to Late Pleistocene human habitation in the western Nefud Desert, Saudi Arabia
