  • An age-depth model and revised stratigraphy of vertebrate-bearing units in Natural Trap Cave, Wyoming

    Open Access•David M Lovelace, Cory M Redman et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

Excavations at Natural Trap Cave (NTC) began in the mid-1970's and quickly yielded evidence of a diverse steppe fauna that existed during the Last Glacial Maximum (MIS 2) along the western slope of the Bighorn Mountains in north central Wyoming. NTC is a karst pit cave with a 24.5 m vertical drop into a roughly 43 m wide bell-shaped ‘Main Chamber’ and during the course of early excavations a plugged entrance to a fossil-bearing ‘Lower Chamber’ wa…

  • Muknalia is a Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu)

    Open Access•Blaine W Schubert, Joshua X Samuels et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2021•References: 2

Several years ago, a new genus and species of peccary, “'Muknalia minima'”, was described from the Pleistocene of Mexico. We previously examined that specimen and concluded that it was synonymous with the extant collared peccary, 'Pecari tajacu', but that taxonomic revision is rejected by the authors of the original study (this volume). Here, we provide further analysis of “'Muknalia'” and expand on previous evidence from both morphology and taph…

  • Muknalia minima from the Yucatán of Mexico is synonymous with the collared peccary, Pecari tajacu (Artiodactyla)

    Open Access•Blaine W Schubert, Joshua X Samuels et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2020•References: 11

Ongoing investigation of peccary remains from fossiliferous deposits in the Yucatán resulted in re-examination of previously identified tayassuid fossils from the region. This included the recently described new genus and species of peccary, Muknalia minima, which is based on a dentary from Muknal Cave near Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Diagnostic characters of this taxon include a concave notch along the caudal edge of the ascending ramus and a v…

  • A new record of the saber-toothed cat Megantereon (Felidae, Machairodontinae) from an Early Pleistocene Gigantopithecus fauna, Yanliang Cave, Fusui, Guangxi, South China

    Open Access•Min Zhu, Blaine W Schubert et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

  • First taxon date and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) for the large hypercarnivorous South American canid Protocyon troglodytes (Canidae, Carnivora)

    Francisco J Prevosti, Blaine W Schubert•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Late Quaternary chronology and extinction of North American giant short-faced bears (Arctodus simus)

    Open Access•Blaine W Schubert•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2010

  • Latest Pleistocene paleoecology of Jefferson's ground sloth ( Megalonyx jeffersonii ) and elk-moose ( Cervalces scotti ) in northern Illinois

    Open Access•Blaine W Schubert, Russell W Graham et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

New records of Jefferson's ground sloth ( Megalonyx jeffersonii ) and elk-moose ( Cervalces scotti ) from Lang Farm provide the first precise temporal correlation of these taxa with the specific environments inhabited by them near the time of their extinction. Six AMS 14 C measurements establish an age of 11,405 ± 50 14 C yr B.P. for Lang Farm Cervalces and an age of 11,430 ± 60 or 11,485 ± 40 14 C yr B.P. for the Megalonyx . These measurements r…
