  • Collapse of Holocene mangrove ecosystems along the coastline of Oman

Open Access•Valeska Decker, Michaela Falkenroth et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Sedimentological, geochemical, and paleontological investigations of the coastline of northeastern Oman have provided the authors with an in-depth insight into Holocene sea levels and climate conditions. The spatial distribution and species assemblage of mangrove ecosystems are analyzed. These ecosystems are sensitive to changes in sea level and precipitation and thus reflect ecological conditions. The close proximity to archaeological sites allo…

  • Biological Indicators Reveal Small-Scale Sea-Level Variability During MIS 5e (Sur, Sultanate of Oman)

Open Access•Michaela Falkenroth, Silja Kerstin Adolph et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2020•References: 42

The harbour city Sur is located at the northeastern coastline of Oman on a Holocene barrier spit that separates a 6 km2 sized lagoon from the Gulf of Oman. Around the margins of this lagoon a paleo coastal notch occurs 3.75 m above mean sea-level (MSL). The notch contains exceptionally well preserved bioerosional features. Additionally, on several locations coastal notches without bioerosional features occur. At one location a beachrock is found …

  • Geoarchaeological Evidence for the Decline of the Medieval City of Qalhat, Oman

    Open Access•Alina Marie Ermertz, Miklós Kázmér et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 40

The medieval city of Qalhat was an important trade town along the sea routes in the Indian Ocean. The reasons for the decline of the city are unclear, as the archaeological evidence is inconclusive. Geological field work was conducted and a digital elevation model analysed to test the hypothesis that the city was destroyed by an earthquake. The study area is located along the passive continental margin of the Arabian Plate. The coast shows a set …
