Open Access•Axelle Brémont, Amany elNaggar et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin de l Institut français d…•2025

The site of the ‘Main Cemetery’ of Naqada, north of Luxor, has yielded significant material remains that provide insights into this culture, which played a vital role in the early development of Egyptian civilization in the fourth millennium BCE. Unfortunately, of the 1918 tombs listed by W.M.F. Petrie during his excavation of the site, only 138 were described in the 1896 publication. This article aims to reinvestigate 735 tombs from this cemeter…

  • Millennial-Scale Transformations of Land Use in a Canyon in Southeast Arabia

    Open Access•Taichi Kuronuma, Takehiro Miki et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2025•References: 6

The lowland oases and highland plateaus of Southeast Arabia have been occupied since ancient times due to the availability of groundwater resulting from abundant precipitation in the mountains. By contrast, the land use of intermediate narrow canyons as pathways to transport between oases and mountains has not been fully understood, and thus the holistic understanding of how people have used and adapted to arid land still remains to be pursued. T…

This study describes the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of pottery collected from Mugharat al‐Kahf and WTN02 in Wadi Tanuf, north‐central Oman, to clarify interregional similarities and differences in pottery production techniques and examine the existence of interregional trade in pottery with respect to changes in mobile communities. Potsherds from these sites were characterised using thin‐section petrography and instrumental neut…

  • Archaeological surveys of a canyon and floodplain in the Tanūf District, North‐Central Oman

Open Access•Taichi Kuronuma, Takehiro Miki et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2022•References: 8

The highly‐elevated and rugged topography of the Al‐Ḥajar Mountains in Northern Oman requires a topographically‐optimised survey methodology. To reconstruct the archaeological landscapes in the southern piedmont area of the Tanūf District, we applied a combined ground survey and satellite imagery analysis. In the narrow canyon, we travelled towards visible caves on the cliffs and cairns on the ridges and recorded all encountered sites on the way.…

  • Cave occupations in Southeastern Arabia in the second millennium BCE

Open Access•Takehiro Miki, Taichi Kuronuma et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 13

This paper reports the results of excavation at Mugharat al‐Kahf (WTN01) in Wādī Tanūf, North‐central Oman. It also provides information on the nonmortuary and nonsedentary activities in central Oman during the Wādī Sūq period (2000–1600 BCE), as the subsistence and social arrangements of this period are the subject of much debate. Previous surveys had discovered a substantial amount of Wādī Sūq pottery at the site. This project took forward the …
