Continental mapping of African sand mining highlights limited benefits for local infrastructure and socio-economic development
Trans-Aegean Dispersal and Occupation Potential as Reflected in Predictive Modeling for the Early and Middle Pleistocene
Recent paleogeographic reconstructions for the Pleistocene indicate the prevalence of terrestrial environments with attractive natural resources in the largest part of the area now covered by the Aegean Sea. What would the occurrence of the extended terrestrial Aegean landscapes mean regarding connections between western Anatolia and Europe via the Greek mainland during the Early and Middle Pleistocene? This article explores the Aegean perspectiv…
Mid-Pleistocene volcano-tectonic fragmentation of the Turkana-Suguta Megalake
The East African Rift System (EARS) is a key location for studying Plio-Pleistocene paleoclimate and hominin inhabitance. The region experienced profound reorganization during this interval as a response to volcanism, tectonics and climate change, and arguably detailed spatiotemporally coherent climate datasets could provide evidence of causal links between geologic change and hominin evolution. However, continued tectonism, erosion, burial and v…

Tectonic Geomorphology and Soil Edaphics as Controls on Animal Migrations and Human Dispersal Patterns
Edaphic and Topographic Constraints on Exploitation of the Central Kenya Rift by Large Mammals and Early Hominins
Our aim in this paper is to create a palaeoenvironmental and spatio-temporal framework for interpreting human land use and exploitation of large mammals in the Central Kenya Rift over the past 2 million years, with particular reference to the Nakuru-Elmenteita-Naivasha basin and its adjacent rift flanks on the Kinangop Plateau and Mau escarpment. We pay particular attention to the tectonic and volcanic history of the region, and to the system of …
