Race and the Capital Riot: How Racial Attitudes Relate to Anti-Democratic Beliefs Following the January 6th Insurrection
thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol building in an effort to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election.United States Senators and House members had to run for cover and hide as the insurrection became violent, with both extensive property damage and physical violence resulting in loss of life.Scholars of American democracy, elections, and racial/ethnic relations in the U.S. have argued that t…
Comparing Methods for Estimating Demographics in Racially Polarized Voting Analyses
We consider the cascading effects of researcher decisions throughout the process of quantifying racially polarized voting (RPV). We contrast three methods of estimating precinct racial composition, Bayesian Improved Surname Geocoding (BISG), fully Bayesian BISG, and Citizen Voting Age Population (CVAP), and two algorithms for performing ecological inference (EI), King's EI and EI:RxC using eiCompare. Using data from two different elections we ide…
How Social Ties with Undocumented Immigrants Motivate Latinx Political Participation
Prior research suggests social ties with undocumented immigrants among Latinxs may increase political engagement despite constraints undocumented social networks may introduce. We build on prior research and find across six surveys of Latinxs that social ties with undocumented immigrants are reliably associated with collective, identity expressive activities such as protesting, but not activities where immigration may not be immediately relevant,…
Estimating Candidate Support in Voting Rights Act Cases: Comparing Iterative EI and EI-R×C Methods
Scholars and legal practitioners of voting rights are concerned with estimating individual-level voting behavior from aggregate-level data. The most commonly used technique, King's ecological inference (EI), has been questioned for inflexibility in multiethnic settings or with multiple candidates. One method for estimating vote support for multiple candidates in the same election is called ecological inference: row by columns (R×C). While some si…
The Ripple Effect: The Political Consequences of Proximal Contact with Immigration Enforcement
A growing body of research suggests that proximal exposure to immigration enforcement can have important social and health-related consequences. However, there is little research identifying the impact of proximal contact with immigration policy on political attitudes and behaviors, and still less investigating the underlying mechanisms that might connect contact and political dispositions. Drawing on insights from criminal justice, we argue that…

Diversity in Academia in a Post-Truth World
I never imagined during my period of infatuation with postmodern theory that I would one day be an advocate for objective truth. But if we’ve learned anything since the 2016 US presidential election, it’s that facts and truth matter. While sensitive to the ways in which data can be manipulated, or “alternative facts” mobilized, to recollect Kellyanne Conway’s infamous phrase, hard data on diversity can be a powerful reality check.1 To that end, t…

American Muslim Political Participation: Between Diversity and Cohesion
American Muslims’ increased societal salience has led to greater scrutiny of their political and social attitudes. Yet, systematic analyses of this population remain rare and tend to aggregate findings at a level that masks the community's diverse backgrounds and experiences. As a partial corrective, our paper provides a comprehensive demographic analysis of American Muslim political participation. Our conclusions, first, complement previous effo…

The Political Incorporation of Muslims in the United States: The Mobilizing Role of Religiosity in Islam
Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, popular perceptions in the United States, especially among political elites, continue to believe that religious Muslims oppose American democratic traditions and values. While many studies find positive relationships between mosque attendance and civic participation among U.S. Muslims, an empirical and theoretical puzzle continues to exist. What is missing is research that examines the relationsh…
