  • Congress, the Houses of Ill Repute: Editorial Cartoonists Take on the House and Senate

    This article presents a content analysis of more than 600 editorial cartoons covering 40 years designed to explore the themes and strategies editorial cartoonists use to represent Congress and its members. While the cartooning strategies are relatively consistent, the targets and criticisms embedded in cartoons vary along partisanship and positional lines

    Since David Broder issued a challenge to journalists after the 1988 presidential campaign to move from being “color commentators” to “referees,” political campaign ad watches have proliferated. This article uses originally coded data to empirically document the growth, increasing diversity, and content of all original print ad watches from the 1992,1996, and 2000 election cycles.   • Who Makes Our Laws? The Legislative Effectiveness of Members of the U. S. Congress

    Focusing on the distribution of power in the U. S. House of Representatives, this paper uses a decision-making approach and measures power by the ability of a member of Congress to get bills enacted into law. The findings reveal that, while a relatively large number of members expend effort in the legislative realm and have some success, this group can still be identified as a unique subset, which is only partially specified by the conventional w…
