  • Menstrual cycle hormonal fluctuations and their associations with athletic performance and injury susceptibility in female athletes

Open Access•Yue Zou, Ying Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Background The menstrual cycle (MC) is characterized by periodic fluctuations in estradiol and progesterone that may influence exercise metabolism, neuromuscular function, connective-tissue properties, menstrual symptom burden, recovery, and musculoskeletal injury susceptibility in female athletes. However, inconsistent findings and substantial inter- and intraindividual variability have prevented the development of universally applicable practic…

  • Bilinguals show reduced sensitivity to audience-related considerations in language production: Corpus evidence from Mandarin referring expressions

    Yue Zou, Yike Yang•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2026

It has long been argued that speakers’ choices of linguistic forms during production are influenced by the functional pressures of efficiency and ambiguity avoidance. A reduced form is often easier to produce but can potentially cause ambiguity. Examining bilinguals’ choices between the full and reduced forms can provide valuable insights into how the pressures compete with each other. In the present study, we explore the alternating use of full …

  • Communicative pressures influence the use of adverbs as well as adjectives: Evidence from a crosslinguistic investigation

    Yue Zou•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2025

It has long been observed in previous research that language production is under the influence of communicative pressures. Language users tend to act efficiently and to structure their utterances to optimize communicative properties. In this study, based on the communicative efficiency hypothesis, we tested two predictions about the use of adjectives and adverbs, respectively. Specifically, it is predicted that pre-nominal languages should use mo…

  • A basic General Service List for Chinese Sign Language

Open Access•Yue Zou, Hao Lin•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2025

In this study, we present a basic General Service List for Chinese Sign Language (basic GSL for CSL) that is developed on the basis of a corpus of 103,061 sign tokens by examining their frequency, range ratio, and dispersion. To test its reliability, we compared it to a frequency list in (Yuko, L. 2015. A Quantitative study of vocabulary in Shanghai Sign Language. Fudan University) and found a substantial overlap of lexical items and a positive c…

  • A Diachronic Investigation of the Change in Form and Formational‐Semantic Systematicity of the Chinese Sign Language Lexicon

    Open Access•Yue Zou, Hao Lin•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•2025•References: 44

It has been argued in previous research that several competing pressures guide the directions of language evolution (economy vs. redundancy; arbitrariness vs. systematicity). For sign languages, however, the effects of competing pressures on their change of lexical systems remain largely unclear. In the present study, we focus on the diachronic change in form and formational‐semantic systematicity of the Chinese Sign Language (CSL) lexicon. Drawi…

  • Sharpening anticipatory design senses for sustainable ‘scentory’ futures

  • Thirty Years of Reform and Opening Up: Teaching International Relations in China

    Open Access•Patrice C Mcmahon, Yue Zou•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2011•Cited by: 3

In 1978, Deng Xiaoping declared that China's future depended on gaige kaifang (reform and opening up to the West). By any standard, China has reformed its economic system and prospered handsomely by integrating into the world economy. With less fanfare, China has taken steps to restructure its political system and committed substantial resources to harmonizing relations with its neighbors. Given these changes, China's insular tradition, and Commu…
