Empowered Narratives: How BLK Magazine Used Advocacy Journalism to Represent Black LGBTQ People
Despite the important role played by BLK magazine in the Black gay rights movement in the US, there is little scholarship focusing on the content of the magazine and how its pages gave voice and visibility to a marginalized population. Using archived issues of BLK, this paper conducted a qualitative content analysis of the articles published in the magazine from its inception in 1988 to its closure in 1994 to understand how the magazine used advo…
Narrative Framing of the Syrian Refugee Crisis in British Religious News

News Attention in a Mobile Era
Mobile access to the Internet is changing the way people consume information, yet we know little about the effects of this shift on news consumption. Consuming news is key to democratic citizenship, but is attention to news the same in a mobile environment? We argue that attention to news on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones is not the same as attention to news for those on computers. Our research uses eye tracking in two lab experim…
Latino Portrayals in Local News Media: Underrepresentation, Negative Stereotypes, and Institutional Predictors of Coverage
Given the rise in negative rhetoric about Latinos in the U.S., it is essential to examine whether this negative tone extends to general, local news as well. An analysis of 2426 news articles drawn from 55 local newspapers in 2015 reveals several important findings. First, despite the intense spotlight on Latinos, they are still underrepresented in local news media. Relative to the other ethnic groups and whites, Latinos are more likely to be port…
Online product research as a labor of love: Motherhood and the social construction of the baby registry
This article examines how women engage in online product research as a means to negotiate their transition into motherhood. Drawing upon data from in-depth interviews with 32 expectant mothers, we demonstrate how the process of constructing baby registries is mediated by intensive online product research. By exploring the role of online resources in consumer decision-making and the different strategies that women employ to meet the perceived chal…
A Case of More Is Less: The Role of Gender in U.S. Presidential Debates
For candidates and voters alike, U.S. politics is a gendered space in which women are often underrepresented. Participation from women is assumed to equalize representation and voice in the political process; however, little research has explored gender influence on campaign agendas, particularly in non-news contexts. This study applies a quantitative content analysis to explore the influence of (1) candidate gender, (2) journalist gender, and (3…
I Approve This Candidate: The Strategic Use of Ad Endorsements in the 2008 Election
Contextual and strategic factors that influence the use of endorsements in political advertisements represent an underexplored area of the scholarly literature, resulting in a gap between the art and science of campaigning and the advertising-effects literature. This article uses data from the Wisconsin Ad Project to study endorsements in ads aired during the 2008 election cycle. We show that endorsements are used strategically by campaigns and t…
