Minimizing the Effects of Temporal Aggregation on Event Data Analysis
Event data remains one of the best means for evaluating reciprocity and triangularity in international politics. One difficulty with using this type of data has been its susceptibility to the statistical effects of temporal aggregation. This article examines the concept of the natural interval in event data analysis, specifies how a user-selected aggregation interval affects measured stimulus--response behavior, and proposes a method for calculat…

The Nature of Borders and International Conflict: Revisiting Hypotheses on Territory
This study examines the utility of moving beyond a simple “on–off” dichotomous view of contiguous land borders. For each of the 301 contiguous land borders between states in the international system, measures of ease of interaction, salience, and overall border “vitalness” have been developed using Geographical Information Systems technology. These variables are used to test two major extant lines of thought in international relations literature,…
The Isle of Ted Simulation: Teaching Collective Action in International Relations and Organization
The Isle of Ted Simulation is a successful teaching tool that is disarmingly simple yet repeatedly captivates participants. Although I originally designed the simulation to explain collective-action problems in American politics, almost all recent uses of the simulation have been in international relations and international organization classes. The simulation is an effective teaching tool for a wide variety of issues including: collective goods …
Internet Regulation Process Model: The Effect of Societies, Communities, and Governments
The Internet is often seen as borderless and unmanageable and, therefore, not fully understandable. Starting from the assumption that it can be understood, we begin an attempt to organize the Internet by characterizing it as a behavior space in which groups categorized as societies, communities, and governments interact. We emphasize the utility of organizing the Internet and focus specifically on attempts by societies, communities, and governmen…
