  • Understanding politicians’ discourse on inflation and cost of living in Canada

    Open Access•Marc-Antoine Rancourt, Axel Déry et al.•ARTICLE•Parliamentary Affairs•2025•References: 21

Recent polls indicate that inflation is a frustrating issue for Canadians. How do politicians react to citizens’ dissatisfaction when inflation rates are high? This study analyzed transcripts of parliamentary interventions from the House of Commons of Canada from 2006 to 2022, as well as data on electoral pledges from the Canadian Polimeter. This study examined how Canadian politicians of various partisan affiliations respond to citizens’ concern…

  • Sondages probabilistes et autres créatures mythiques

    Open Access•William Poirier, Anne-Sophie Charest et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•2025•References: 29

  • The Battle for the Soul of the Nation

    Open Access•Eric Taylor Woods, Alexandre Fortier-Chouinard et al.•ARTICLE•Political Communication•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 64

This article examines the nationalist rhetoric of Biden and Trump in the 2020 presidential election, focusing on how the candidates represented, and contested, the meaning of American national identity. To do so, we construct a novel analytical framework to undertake a contextual content analysis of Biden and Trump’s campaign tweets (n = 4,321). We demonstrate that the meaning of national identity was a key source of contestation in the election,…

  • Whiny, Fake, and I Don't Like Her Hair

    Open Access•Erin Tolley, Andrea Lawlor et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2023•Cited by: 8•References: 85

Municipal mayoral elections present a compelling puzzle: what happens when gendered stereotypes about level of government conflict with those about type of office? Although local politics is viewed as communal and more feminine, the mayoral office is a prominent, prestigious position of political leadership that voters may perceive as more masculine. We intervene by analyzing open-ended comments about 32 mayoral candidates from a survey of 14,438…

  • Getting the Message Out

    Open Access•Alexandre Fortier-Chouinard, Marc André Bodet et al.•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Mail-delivered get-out-the-vote (GOTV) field experiments have been found to increase voter turnout in some but not all contexts. We hypothesize that mail-delivered GOTV interventions are more successful in low-salience elections and test this in a systematic way for the first time. Relying on a systematic literature review and a meta-regression framework, we find that primary elections have a strong and significant positive impact on the success …

  • Positive communication in a catastrophic crisis

Crisis management strategies have taken a new significance amidst the COVID-19 crisis. In \nCanada, while the tone of media coverage of political leaders is usually stable over time, the \npandemic has provoked variation that provides an opportunity to test the effect of leaders’ crisis \nmanagement strategies on the tone of media coverage. Using a unique dataset of online front-page \narticles from 11 Canadian media outlets, an automated textual…
