  • Drivers of Consensus: Responses to Brexit in Germany, France, Ireland and Poland

    Open Access•Paul Taggart, Kai Oppermann et al.•ARTICLE•German Politics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 42

Brexit was potentially a highly divisive issue for the EU27 with states having different relationships with the UK. And yet in the period from the UK’s referendum in 2016 until the exit of the UK in 2020, the EU27 maintained a remarkable degree of unity. This article examines relative EU27 unity in the face of the Brexit process. The article is based on interviews and other research on four selected EU member states: Germany, France, Poland and I…

  • The membership of parties abroad: A case study of the UK

    Open Access•Susan P Collard, Tudi Kernalegenn•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 23

Against a long trend decline in the membership of political parties in Western democracies, there has been an unexpected surge in the UK since 2015. Interestingly, this phenomenon has also been observed amongst British expatriates, despite their historically very low levels of engagement. Our paper explores this development using a multi-methods approach to investigate its impact across the three main parties, comparing the relative importance of…

  • UK Parties Abroad and Expatriate Voters: The Brexit Backlash

    Open Access•Susan Collard, Susan P Collard et al.•ARTICLE•Parliamentary Affairs•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Recent developments in British politics have foregrounded two issues of particular importance to Britons living overseas: their voting rights in the UK and Brexit. In light of this, the number of British expatriates registering to vote has risen sharply and provided an incentive to develop UK parties abroad. We, therefore, set out the history and organisational structures of the major British parties abroad, and report the results of a unique onl…

  • The UK Politics of Overseas Voting

    Open Access•Susan Collard, Susan P Collard•ARTICLE•The Political Quarterly•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 1

The enfranchisement of non‐resident citizens has always been controversial in the UK , where for historical reasons, voting rights are not as closely associated with citizenship as elsewhere. The introduction of ‘overseas’ voting in the 1980s by the Conservatives was contested by Labour as a form of ‘international gerrymandering’ since expatriates were widely assumed to be disproportionately wealthy and therefore more likely to vote Tory. Expatri…

  • Mise au point sur l'idée du Grand Louvre

    Susan P Collard•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2013•References: 1

  • The architecture of power: François Mitterrand’sGrands Travauxrevisited1

    Susan P Collard•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2008•Cited by: 1

Building on earlier research, this paper proposes a more refined analysis of how the main decision‐making processes pertaining to the grands travaux were established in the very early stages. Informed by consultation of official archival sources to which access was obtained by special permission (dérogation), it shows the manner and extent of the personal intervention by François Mitterrand, and offers new insights into his attachment to the Gran…
