The Growing Influence of Gender Attitudes on Public Support for Hillary Clinton, 2008–2012
Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential run brought with it an unwelcome reminder of the added obstacles women candidates often encounter. From “Iron my Shirt” banners to debates regarding whether Clinton was overly emotional or an ice princess, we were faced with gender stereotypes that have often plagued women in leadership roles. Her campaign strategy attempted to counteract preconceived notions of female candidates by accentuating Clinton's tough…
Engendering Attitudes Toward Immigration Policy
Scholars have debated the existence of, difference between, and impact of gendered ethics based on either a rights framework or an ethic of care. This study utilizes original national survey data. Scales are constructed to test for and explore how the uses of different ethical frameworks lead to divergent opinions and policy prescriptions regarding immigration policies in the United States. The final discussion explores implications for understan…
The International City/County Management Association Code of Ethics

Agreement to adhere to the ICMA Code of Ethics is a requirement for membership and is intended to further the mission by providing principles of conduct to members. A review of all violation cases presented to the ICMA board from 1998 to 2008 that resulte…
President Obama and Gay Rights
We examine the role and potential impact of gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) voters in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. We look at trend data from 1990 to 2010 to assess the fluctuations in support for the Democratic Party by GLB voters, specifically a substantial decrease in support during the 2010 midterm elections. We use data from the 2008 election to assess the estimated contribution the GLB vote made toward President Obama's margin…
A political caring index
In this article, we present a metric to measure the level of 'care' provided by state policies. We have created an index, using state-level data from the USA, which operationalizes an institutional political theory of care. Using this political caring index, we provide data analysis of the impact of levels of care on such societal issues as suicide rates, high school dropout rates and violent crime. In doing so, we explore the relationship betwee…
