  • Russian Migrants in Tbilisi: The New White Russians

    Open Access•Josiah F Marineau, Brandon Hicks•ARTICLE•Journal of Eurasian Studies•2025•References: 2

Following the February 24, 2022 invasion of Ukraine by the Russian military, an estimated 100,000 Russians fled their own country to take refuge in Georgia. The arrival of Russians in large numbers, however, did not go unnoticed by many in Georgia, 20% of which continues to be occupied by the Russian military. These events prompt the following questions: Why did Russians choose to flee their country, and what have their lives been like in Georgia…

  • ‘The Swarm Principle’: A Sub-National Spatial Analysis of Aid Targeting and Donor Coordination in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Josiah F Marineau, Michael G Findley•ARTICLE•Stability International Journal…•2020

Do bilateral and multilateral foreign aid donors target poverty? To answer that question, we present a framework for assessing the quality of aid targeting sub-nationally. If donors cluster aid in areas with concentrated poverty, or spread out aid in areas of diffuse poverty, then we conclude that donors are targeting aid well. Furthermore, because co-financing may be a mechanism that improves coordination and information-sharing among donors, we…

  • The local geography of transnational terrorism

    Open Access•Josiah F Marineau, Josiah Marineau et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict Management and Peace…•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 23

Why are some locations more attractive targets for transnational terrorism than others? Remarkably little is known about the local-level conditions and attributes that determine precisely where transnational terror attacks occur within targeted countries. To date, quantitative terrorism research identifies country- or region-level correlates of terrorism, neglecting possible local factors. In this study, we posit five local-level factors that inc…

  • Lootable resources and third-party intervention into civil wars

    Open Access•Michael G Findley, Josiah F Marineau•ARTICLE•Conflict Management and Peace…•2014•Cited by: 19•References: 45

Third parties intervene in ongoing civil wars frequently and at times with nefarious intentions. In this paper, we consider the possibility that lootable natural resources motivate third parties to intervene in wars on the side of the opposition. Such resources offer a host of benefits to the intervener, including resource extraction and greater likelihood of rebel success. When rebels have access to lootable resources, we hypothesize that third …
