  • Stock market reactions to firm visits by presidents of the United States

    Open Access•Colby D Green, Douglas A Schuler et al.•ARTICLE•Presidential Studies Quarterly•2023•References: 15

We examine stock market reactions to public company visits and the public comments made therein by five presidents (George H. W. Bush through Donald J. Trump) over three decades (from 1989 to 2019). We find striking evidence that investors value these visits during periods of unified government or when the president announces favorable policy. However, a president's praise during the visit and his popularity at the time of the visit do not appear…

With the advent of a new year and the impending end of my term as SIGCAS Chair it seems just about the right time to share some thoughts on SIGCAS, its mission and where we all stand in relation to it. • Sigenergy everything

Open Access•Douglas A Schuler, Douglas Schuler•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2021

I recently learned that part of my job as SIGCAS Chair was to weigh in on whether an "emerging SIG" should become an active SIG. In early November I was asked to look at the documentation provided by the emerging SIGEnergy. Everything that I saw was relevant and convincing: The potential and need for the new SIG was amply demonstrated. On the other hand, I had the smallest inkling that the SIG could have a bit more CAS sprinkled in with the energ…

  • Thinking about the 2020 Sigcas membership survey

Open Access•Douglas A Schuler, Douglas Schuler•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2021

Last November (2020) the SIGCAS executive board conducted a survey of SIGCAS members to get a picture of who we are, where we come from, what we're interested in, and what the membership would like to see the board do to better fulfill its mission. Based on discussions with the executive board, SIGCAS Vice Chair Lisa Kaczmarczyk implemented the survey using Survey Monkey. As with all surveys one can't get all the information one would like and th…

There is nothing unusual or sinister in the fact that each generation rewrites history to suit its own needs, or about disagreements within the profession and among the public at large about how history should best be taught and studied.--- Eric Foner, Who owns history?: rethinking the past in a changing world. 2002. p. xi [2]

  • A Unique Pedagogical Approach to Voting and Public Goods

    Open Access•Douglas A Schuler, Matthew Chappell et al.•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2010•References: 1

Fourth grade students at a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, participated in a one-week exercise intended to mimic the process of creating a public good through a democratic process. The exercise involved students in four separate classes designing a class party with different characteristics (theme, music, and food) through a voluntary but personally costly voting procedure. The students then held the party that they had created. A for…

    Open Access•Amy J Hillman, Gerald D Keim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Management•2004

Corporate political activities, or corporate attempts to shape government policy in ways favorable to the firm, are commonly employed by firms across countries. We review recent scholarly work from management, political science, economics and sociology in the area of corporate political activity (CPA), paying particular attention to the literature published since Shaffer’s [Shaffer, B. 1995. Firm-level responses to government regulation: Theoreti…

This essay reviews the primary methods that have been used to study corporate public affairs, issues management, and corporate political activity (PA/IM/CPA). We identify three tractable areas of research in these areas: (1) the determinants of PAM/IM/CPA; (2) the effects of PAM/IM/CPA on public policy outcomes; and (3) the effects of public policy outcomes on overall firm financial performance. Despite the considerable difficulties in gathering …
