Early Bronze Age pebble installations from Tell es-Safi/Gath, Israel
Pebble stone installations are commonly found at various Early Bronze Age sites in the southern Levant. However, their function is often assumed or unknown. Thirteen circular pebble installations were found scattered throughout a residential neighbourhood dating to the Early Bronze Age III at Tell es-Safi/Gath. Five such installations were recently studied by implementing an integrated micro-archaeological approach by which all micro- and macro-a…

Climatic changes and social transformations in the Near East and North Africa during the ‘long’ 4th millennium BC
This paper explores the possible links between rapid climate change (RCC) and social change in the Near East and surrounding regions (Anatolia, central Syria, southern Israel, Mesopotamia, Cyprus and eastern and central Sahara) during the ‘long’ 4th millennium (∼4500–3000) BC. Twenty terrestrial and 20 marine climate proxies are used to identify long-term trends in humidity involving transitions from humid to arid conditions and vice versa. The f…
The Canaanean Blades from Tel Yarmuth, Israel
Evolution in the Desert

Epipalaeolithic occupations in Nahal Neqarot Rockshelter, Negev, Israel
Recent excavations at Nahal Neqarot Rockshelter in the Central Negev, Israel, revealed 60 cm of in situ sediments. The associated lithic industry is mostly attributable to the Middle Epipalaeolithic Ramonian industry, though there is also evidence for sporadic earlier and later Epipalaeolithic use of the site. This is confirmed by three accelerator 14C dates, which contribute to a better understanding of the chronological framework for the Epipal…

Kvish Harif
Excavations at the site of Kvish Harif, in the Central Negev Highlands, have uncovered architecture and artifacts dating to the terminal Neolithic. The site is of significance since architecturally it seems to reflect a later Chalcolithic pastoral adaptation, but its lithic assemblage, especially the high percentage of arrowheads, falls neatly into the Neolithic spectrum. The dominance of transversal arrowheads is unique among later Neolithic sit…

The Microlithic Lunate
Backed microlithic lunates, normally associated with late epipaleolithic industries in the Near East, reappeared for a brief span toward the end of the fourth millennium B.C. This tool type may serve as a chrono-stratigraphic indicator for this period, and their reappearance is of intrinsic theoretical interest
