Pollen grains of Gramineae and Cerealia from Shanidar and Zawi Chemi
Two different measurements allow us to divide grass pollens into different types; the first being the diameter of the grain and the second, the external diameter of the annulus encircling the pore. As at Shanidar in northern Iraq, such "Cerealia type" pollens are absent or very rare during pre-agricultural periods, there are two possible explanations. First, this may be due simply to climatic fluctuations in the Zagros mountains during the Wurm g…

The excavations at Shanidar cave, Iraq, had to stop forty years ago due to the political situation. The first results obtained then from the Mousterian to the Neolithic are presented here. R. Solecki, struck by the aspect of the sediments of Shanidar 4 's burial, sampled largely, thus giving the possibility of a detailed palynological study. Not only had the corpse been laid, on a bed of flowers - recovered as stamen - but these are the same seve…

The excavation at Seclin allowed to organise chronogically different sequences of Prehistoric industries along the Middle Palaeolithic in the silt beds dated from the oldest Weichselian. The pollen analysis of archeological sediments sampled out from four different places in the sites showed numerous gaps in each one of these series, but they also permitted cross-dating. The first phases of the prehistoric industries display practically identical…

Archaeological and Faunal Evidence from Natufian and Timnian Sites in Southern Jordan, with Notes on Pollen Evidence
Archaeological excavations in the vicinity of Ras en-Naqb, southern Jordan, produced artifacts and faunal remains of two distinct cultural stages. The early Natufian site of Wâdī Judayid is carbon-dated ca. 12,000 b. p. This site predates the earliest dated coastal site in the Levant. The large number and variety of tools, combined with the large amount of débitage and the faunal remains indicate that the Wâdī Judayid site was a large base camp o…

Pollen analysis of deposits from the rock shelter of Houmian, at an altitude of 1 800 m in the Iranian Zagros mountains, throws new light both on the age of the site's Mousterian industry and on the flora of the period. The earliest layers were formed during a rather cold dry phase when steppe was predominant in spite of the presence of occasional stands of oak and pine. Then trees became more numerous and oak woodland spread across the area, the…
Les analyses polliniques au Moyen-Orient
In the Middle East, the pollen analysis are still veryfew and the sequences covering several millennia are scarce. In spite of the fact that they offer some variations due to botanical factors, two types of pollen spectra are complementary : the first one deals with wet places as lakes and marshes, the second one cornes from dry soils which are generally related to archaeological sites. Punctual palynological results concern the last Interglacial…

Tell Aswad (Damascène)
Tell Aswad, in the Damascus basin, was settled by a community offarmers and huniers from early VIIIth Millennium (ca. 7800 BC) to mid VIIth Millennium. Lithic industries seem located both on typological and geographical grounds in a transitional position between those from Palestine and Middle Euphrates. Basai Aswad I shows both in its flaking techniques (naviform cores, crested blades) and in its sickles types features in common with Mureybet II…
The profile of Seclin is located on a slope of the chalky Melantois. It shows a weichselian loam series with a coverloess and layered loamy-chalky formations overlying a thick humic complex. This one is correlated with the Early Glacial "Warneton Soil Complex". The interest of the pollen analysis of Seclin consists more particularly in the study of the lower complex. An interstadial phase (Brörup) is shown by the existence of a thick coniferous f…
The Excavation of Hayonim Terrace: An Interim Report
The site of Hayonim Terrace contains occupations of two Epipaleolithic complexes: the Natufian and the Geometric Kebaran. The prehistoric occupations of the terrace appear to span a period of transition between hunting/ collecting and food-producing economies. Excavation of the terrace has provided considerable information on the environmental setting and prehistoric adaptive strategies of this period
A number of pollen analysis were carried out on a very wide range of Near-Eastern samples dated between the Riss-Wurm Interglacial and the Holocene. Samples were obtained from marine fossiliferous sandstone, Lebanese cave and rock-shelter deposits and various lacustrian and ground sites in the Syrian steppe. Using modern processing methods, an adequate number of pollens was reached in most cases. A tentative wurmian climate chronology is suggeste…
Dénomination des oscillations würmiennes
This is an attempt to incite the different specialists to clarify the terms used for the würmian oscillations. What we are intending to show out is the confusion caused by the numbering of Würm and the numbering of loess, as well as the confusion araised by the use of the same terms for different periods. We have been highly particular about respecting the dates and correspondances proposed by the authors themselves, though we know how uncertain …
