  • On Being Mentored by Jean-Claude Gardin

    Open Access•Vanda Vitali•ARTICLE•Les Nouvelles de l archéologie•2016

I feel fortunate to have had Jean-Claude as one of my mentors and when I, in turn, mentored my younger colleagues, I often thought of him, of what I learned from him. Here is what I would write or say to them. Most university students, and I am thinking of those in their graduate years of study, may go further into research and associated philosophies, and develop admiration for the work of one or more of their predecessors. It is likely work tha…

  • A formalized approach to analysis of geoarchaeological sediment samples

    Open Access•Vanda Vitali, J A Gifford et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1992•References: 9

This article concerns, first, the development of an approach to data analysis of sedimentological, micro‐ and macrofaunal, and artifactual data obtained from analysis of geoarchaeological sediment core samples and, second, an algorithmic ordering of resulting sediment groups to arrive at a definitive stratigraphic sequence. Correspondence analysis (CA) was the principal data analysis technique applied, and the algorithmic ordering is one develope…

  • Palaeogeography of Carthage (Tunisia)

    Open Access•J A Gifford, John Gifford et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1992•Cited by: 7•References: 6

  • Trace‐element variability of native copper within a large ore body

Open Access•James Allert, James D Allert et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1991•Cited by: 1

This study attempts both single‐site and regional trace‐element variability assessments focusing on the Kingston Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan, USA, and other sources of native copper in the Lake Superior region of the United States and Canada. This information is of potential significance to all studies trying to characterize and distinguish between individual mineral sources. It is of particular importance to geoarchaeologists/archaeometrists…

  • Études archéométriques de provenance des artefacts céramiques

    Vanda Vitali•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•1990

    Open Access•Vanda Vitali•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1988

  • A hierarchical taxonomic procedure for provenance determination

  • The Dalma Tradition

    Elizabeth F Henrickson, Vanda Vitali•ARTICLE•Paléorient•1987•Cited by: 11•References: 4

In the mid-fifth millennium B.C., the remarkably homogeneous Dalma ceramic assemblage spread throughout much of the rugged Zagros highlands of north and central western Iran. This study examines Dalma pottery production and distribution patterns by utilizing two distinct kinds of evidence. First, the several diagnostic Dalma wares and their geographical distributions are presented. Second, stylistic and apparent (macroscopic) ware homogeneity is …

  • An approach to the use of packaged statistical programs for cluster, classification, and discriminant analysis of trace element data

    Open Access•Vanda Vitali, Ursula Martius Franklin•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The purpose of this paper is to present an approach to be taken when using packaged statistical programs for the evaluation of multivariate data, in particular those programs designed for clustering, classification, and discrimination purposes. A systematic step‐by‐step approach is outlined starting with those steps which should be conducted in order to assure that the assumptions underlying the statistical analyses are satisfied. The use of vari…

  • New approaches to the characterization and classification of ceramics on the basis of their elemental composition

    Open Access•Vanda Vitali, Ursula Martius Franklin•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1986•Cited by: 8•References: 2

  • The Environmental Stability of Ancient Ceramics

    Open Access•Ursula Martius Franklin, Vanda Vitali•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1985•Cited by: 12•References: 2

A series of corrosion experiments was carried out using identical samples of a ceramic of known composition, structure and density which were subjected to a variety of simulated soil solutions. The action of the solutions was monitored by measuring their pH as a function of time at 25 °C and 90 °C. Under all conditions the pH stabilized rapidly. Microscopic and electron microscopic studies showed the presence of reaction/alteration products that …
