  • Aspects of Late Paleoindian Lithic Technological Organization in the Northwestern Lake Superior Region of Canada

    Patrick J Julig, L A Pavlish et al.•CHAPTER•Eastern Paleoindian Lithic…•2021

This chapter focuses on selected aspects of Late Paleoindian lithic technological systematics including: their sources of lithic raw materials, the effect of distance from local raw material sources on certain aspects of tool assemblages (standardization, curation and versatility), and evidence regarding biface preform production and transportation. The data used is from a three-year field research program at Cummins site near Thunder Bay, Canada…

  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy of Geological and Archaeological Chert from Southern Ontario

    Open Access•Alicia L Hawkins, Erin Tourigny et al.•ARTICLE•North American Archaeologist•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) may provide a low-cost, minimally destructive method for sourcing archaeological cherts in Ontario. In this article we outline a study to characterize chert samples from geological sources in Ontario and to identify the raw material of a small number of archaeological specimens from the late sixteenth century A.D. Neutral Iroquoian Emmerson Springs site. We compare our results with those from an ear…

  • Sheguiandah Site: Archaeological, Geological and Paleobotanical Studies at a Paleoindian Site on Manitoulin Island, Ontario

    Patrick J Julig•BOOK•Sheguiandah Site•2002

  • The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic Transition in the Levant and New Thermoluminescence Dates for a Late Mousterian Assemblage from Jerf-al Ajla Cave (Syria)

Daniel Richter, H Bruce Schroeder et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2001•Cited by: 19

Thermoluminescence dating of eight heated flint artefacts from the Late Mousterian (Moustérien tardif) layer С at Jerf al- Ajla, cave in the Syrian steppe desert near Palmyra gave an average age of 33.3 ±2.3 ka. The assemblage shows strong similarities to the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic stratigraphically intermediate layers from the nearby site of Umm el Tlel, which are dated by the same method on the same kind of material to a statistically ide…

  • Geoecology of the Norra Storfjallet Area, Northern Sweden

Open Access•William C Mahaney, Judith Earl et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•1995

The geoecology of the Norra Storfjillet region is reconstructed from the record of deglaciation beginning about 8000 yr BP with the first break-up of the Fenno-Scandian ice sheet (Stage 1). By Stage 2 valleys below 600 m a.s.1. (the Tirna Valley was an exception) had become free of ice. Stage 3 involved a retreat of small valley glaciers to about 700-800 m, major nunataks appeared on the high plateau, and outlet glaciers were considerably reduced…

  • William Nathaniel Irving (1927-1987)

Open Access•Patrick J Julig, Patrick Julig et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1988

William Nathaniel Irving died on November 25, 1987. He was an arctic archaeologist and professor of anthropology at the University of Toronto, internationally recognized as a leading scholar in arctic prehistory. His contributions were significant and appreciated during his lifetime. His initial research interests were in the Inuit cultures of northern Alaska and their antecedents, which led him to study both their ethnoarchaeology and the system…
