    Open Access•Robert M D'Andrea, R Scott Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015

  • The biogeographic histories of Pinus edulis and Pinus monophylla over the last 50,000 years

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Jessica F Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Post-glacial plant migrations are similar to historic and ongoing dispersal and succession

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Kirsten Ironside et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Years of vegetation and climate history on the Colorado Plateau, Utah and Arizona, USA

    Open Access•Larry Coats, Larry L Coats et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Sixty packrat middens were collected in Canyonlands and Grand Canyon National Parks, and these series include sites north of areas that produced previous detailed series from the Colorado Plateau. The exceptionally long time series obtained from each of three sites (> 48,000 14 C yr BP to present) include some of the oldest middens yet discovered. Most middens contain a typical late-Wisconsinan glaciation mixture of mesic and xeric taxa, evidence…

  • Holocene Paleoecology and Prehistory in Highland Southern Arabia

Joy Mccorriston, Eric A Oches et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2002•Cited by: 22•References: 5

  • A Late Holocene Paleoecological Record from Torrey Pines State Reserve, California

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Eugene R Wahl et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

Paleoenvironments of the Torrey Pines State Reserve were reconstructed from a 3600-yr core from Los Peñasquitos Lagoon using fossil pollen, spores, charcoal, chemical stratigraphy, particle size, and magnetic susceptibility. Late Holocene sediments were radiocarbon dated, while the historical sediments were dated using sediment chemistry, fossil pollen, and historical records. At 3600 yr B.P., the estuary was a brackish-water lagoon. By 2800 yr B…

  • Holocene Paleoecology of an Estuary on Santa Rosa Island, California

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Geng-Wu Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

The middle to late Holocene history and early Anglo-European settlement impacts on Santa Rosa Island, California, were studied through the analysis of sediments in a small estuarine marsh. A 5.4-m-long sediment core produced a stratigraphic and pollen record spanning the last 5200 yr. Three major zones are distinguishable in the core. The lowermost zone (5200 to 3250 yr B.P.) represents a time of arid climate with predominantly marine sediment in…

  • The Lower Colorado River Valley

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1986

A chronological sequence of plant macrofossil assemblages from twenty-five pack rat middens provides a record of desert scrub vegetation for most of the last 13,380 yr B.P. from a hyperarid portion of the lower Colorado River Valley. At the end of the late Wisconsin, and probably during much of the Quaternary, the Picacho Peak area, Imperial County, California, supported a typical Mohave Desert association of Larrea divaricata (creosote bush), Co…

  • Late Holocene Vegetation Changes in Greenwater Valley, Mojave Desert, California

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Robert H Webb•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Small-scale late Holocene vegetation changes were determined from a series of 13 modern and fossil packrat middens collected from a site in the Greenwater Valley, northern Mojave Desert, California. Although the site is above the modern lower limit of Coleogyne ramosissima (black-brush), macrofossils of this shrub are only present in samples younger than 270 yr B.P. In order to measure changes more subtle than presence vs absence, macrofossil con…

  • Late Pleistocene Vegetation of Kings Canyon, Sierra Nevada, California

    Open Access•Kenneth L Cole, Kenneth Cole•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1983

Seven packrat midden samples make possible a comparison between the modern and late Pleistocene vegetation in Kings Canyon on the western side of the southern Sierra Nevada. One modern sample contains macrofossils and pollen derived from the present-day oak-chaparral vegetation. Macrofossils from the six late Pleistocene samples record a mixed coniferous forest dominated by the xerophytic conifers Juniperus occidentalis, Pinus cf. ponderosa , and…
