Carbon Sources in Fruit Carbonate of Buglossoides arvensis and Consequences for 14 C Dating
Fruit carbonate of Buglossoides arvensis (syn. Lithospermum arvense ) is a valuable dating and paleoenvironmental proxy for late Quaternary deposits and cultural layers because CaCO 3 in fruit is assumed to be accumulated from photosynthetic carbon (C). However, considering the uptake of HCO 3 – by roots from soil solution, the estimated age could be too old depending on the source of HCO 3 – allocated in fruit carbonate. Until now, no studies ha…
The Early Bronze Age/Middle Bronze Age transition and the aquifer geography in the Near East
Prelude to village life. Environmental data and building traditions of the Epipalaeolithic settlement at Körtik Tepe, Southeastern Turkey
Recent archaeological discoveries, refinements in genetic analyses and the archaeobotanical data require a reconsideration of the nature of the emergence of sedentary farming communities in Southeastern Turkey. In the rescue excavations prompted by the Batman and Ilısu dam projects several Early Holocene sites were discovered. For the first time, new data from Körtik Tepe now provide detailed evidence of a local Epipalaeolithic origin for these p…
Drought stress variability in ancient Near Eastern agricultural systems evidenced by δ 13 C in barley grain
Significance Collapse and resilience of ancient Near Eastern societies is intrinsically tied to agricultural production. Despite intensive palaeoclimate research, the role of environmental conditions in ancient agricultural production is little understood. Stable carbon isotope analysis on cereal grains from archaeological sites provides a direct evidence for drought stress. This paper demonstrates that drought stress correlated with major climat…
Soils of an Early Medieval (4th–6th Centuries) Settlement in the Middle Tobol Region and their Paleogeographic Implication
The study examines the early medieval paleosol (4th–6th centuries AD) and background soil at the fortified settlement of Ust-Utyak-1 located in the forest-steppe area of the Middle Tobol region. Differences in soil type were discovered. In the last 1300–1500 years, the development of forest-steppe chernozems shows a tendency towards exceeding aridity, resulting in the evolvement of leached chernozems into typical chernozems. Comparative analysis …
Genesis, age and archaeological significance of a pedosediment in the depression around Tell Mozan, Syria
Palaeoclimatic indicators in soils buried under archaeological monuments in the Eurasian steppe
The Russian experience of the local reconstruction of the Eurasian steppe climate during the last 5000 years based on geoarchaeological approaches is reviewed. Examples of traditional palaeoclimatic reconstructions in Russia based on organic matter, highly soluble salts and gypsum content and location of salts and gypsum horizons in the profile of buried soils are given. Pedogenic carbonate as a palaeoclimatic indicator is considered. The possibi…
Evidence for Holocene environmental changes in the northern Fertile Crescent provided by pedogenic carbonate coatings
Holocene environmental changes in the northern Fertile Crescent remain poorly understood because of the scarcity of local proxy records in the region. In this study we investigated pedogenic (soil-formed) carbonate coatings on stones at the Pre-Pottery Neolithic site Göbekli Tepe as an indicator of local early-mid Holocene environmental changes. The 14 C ages and stable isotopic composition of carbon and oxygen in thin (0.2–0.3 mm thick) pedogeni…
Radiocarbon dating of thin pedogenic carbonate laminae from Holocene archaeological sites
Radiocarbon dating has been previously suggested to be applicable to pedogenic carbonate. However, until now the validity of radiocarbon dates from pedogenic carbonate remained poorly understood because of the relatively low resolution of chronological controls. In this study we compared the radiocarbon dates (a total of 21) of thin (0.2—0.3 mm in thickness) laminae of pedogenic carbonate coatings on clasts from Holocene archaeological sites in t…
Changing growing conditions for crops during the Near Eastern Bronze Age (3000–1200 BC)
Suitability of biogenic carbonate of Lithospermum fruits for 14 C dating
Lithospermum (Boraginaceae) belongs to a small group of plant taxa that accumulate biogenic carbonate in their fruits. In this genus, carbonate incrustations form in the cells of the epidermis and sclerenchyma of the pericarp. Fossil Lithospermum fruits (nutlets) with well-preserved calcified tissues commonly occur in Quaternary sediments and cultural layers. We tested the suitability of biogenic carbonate of Lithospermum fruits for radiocarbon d…

Soils and soil sediments at Göbekli Tepe, southeastern Turkey
A pedological investigation at Göbekli Tepe, a Pre‐Pottery Neolithic (PPN) site in the northern Fertile Crescent (southeastern Turkey), was undertaken to gain a better understanding of its chronology and paleoenvironments. A catena at the southern slope of the central mound suggests that complex pedosedimentary processes took place at the surface of the mound after the abandonment of the site. Soil formation resulted in a markedly dark Ah horizon…
