  • Prooimia to Order: Pre-Cosmic Reality in Hesiod and Early Pythagoreanism

    Open Access•Phillip Sidney Horky•ARTICLE•Trends in Classics•2025

This paper aims to provide a reflective understanding of what proems are, and what they can achieve, by advancing beyond the literary and agonistic elements of proems, often understood to reflect the social or cultural aspects of literary form. Instead, it seeks to expand the possibilities for understanding proems as distinct avenues for new ways of talking about the content of reality. It does so chiefly through analysis of two major cosmogonic …

  • Italic Pythagoreanism in the Hellenistic Age

Phillip Sidney Horky•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Roman Philosophy•2023

This chapter seeks to elucidate the nature of “Italic” philosophy as a correlate to Pythagorean philosophy in the Hellenistic era. It starts from a claim made in Cicero’s On Old Age (77–78), in which Cato the Elder refers to Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans as “practically our own countrymen,” who were once called “Italian philosophers.” It aims to complicate Cato’s claim by evaluating what “Italian” meant in the writings of Cicero and his contemp…

  • Law and Justice among the Socratics: Contexts for Plato’s Republic

Open Access•Phillip Sidney Horky•ARTICLE•Polis The Journal for Ancient…•2021•Cited by: 1

At the beginning of Republic 2 (358e–359b), Plato has Glaucon ascribe a social contract theory to Thrasymachus and ‘countless others’. This paper takes Glaucon’s description to refer both within the text to Thrasymachus’ views, and outside the text to a series of works, most of which have been lost, On Justice or On Law. It examines what is likely to be the earliest surviving work that presents a philosophical defence of law and justice against t…

  • On Law and Justice: Attributed to Archytas of Tarentum

Phillip Sidney Horky, Monte Ransome Johnson•CHAPTER•Early Greek Ethics•2020

Archytas of Tarentum, a contemporary and associate of Plato, was a famous Pythagorean, mathematician, and statesman of Tarentum. Although his works are lost and most of the fragments attributed to him were composed in later eras, they nevertheless contain valuable information about his thought. In particular, the fragments of On Law and Justice are likely based on a work by the early Peripatetic biographer Aristoxenus of Tarentum. The fragments t…

  • Cosmos in the Ancient World

Open Access•Philip Sidney Horky, Phillip Sidney Horky•BOOK•Cosmos in the Ancient World•2019

How did the ancient Greeks and Romans conceptualise order? This book answers that question by analysing the formative concept of kosmos ('order', 'arrangement', 'ornament') in ancient literature, philosophy, science, art, and religion. This concept encouraged the Greeks and Romans to develop theories to explain core aspects of human life, including nature, beauty, society, politics, the individual, and what lies beyond human experience. Hence, Gr…

  • Plato and Pythagoreanism

    Phillip Sidney Horky•BOOK•Plato and Pythagoreanism•2013

This work argues that a specific type of Pythagorean philosophy, called "mathematical" Pythagoreanism, exercised a decisive influence on fundamental aspects of Plato's philosophy. Specifically, innovations of mathematical Pythagoreans such as Hippasus of Metapontum, Empedocles of Agrigentum, Epicharmus of Syracuse, Philolaus of Croton, and Archytas of Tarentum presented philosophers like Plato with novel ways to reconcile empirical knowledge with…

  • Theophrastus on Platonic and ‘Pythagorean’ Imitation

    Open Access•Phillip Sidney Horky•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 17

In the twenty-fourth aporia of Theophrastus' Metaphysics , there appears an important, if ‘bafflingly elliptical’, ascription to Plato and the ‘Pythagoreans’ of a theory of reduction to the first principles via ‘imitation’ (μίμησις): Πλάτων δὲ καὶ οἱ Πυθαγόρειοι μακρὰν τὴν ἀπόστασιν, ἐπιμιμεῖσθαι τ' ἐθέλειν ἅπαντα· καίτοι καθάπερ ἀντίθεσιν τινα ποιοῦσιν τῆς ἀορίστου δυάδος καὶ τοῦ ἑνός, ἐν ᾗ καὶ τὸ ἄπειρον καὶ τὸ ἄτακτον καὶ ὡς εἰπεῖν πᾶσα ἀμορφί…

  • P hilolaos of K roton

Open Access•Phillip Sidney Horky•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Philolaos (ca. 470–after 388 BCE ) of Kroton or Taras was a Pythagorean and natural philosopher whose influence on the histories of philosophy and science spans Plato to Copernicus.

  • The Imprint of the Soul: Psychosomatic Affection in Plato, Gorgias and the “Orphic” Gold Tablets

Phillip Sidney Horky•ARTICLE•Mouseion Journal of the Classical…•2006•References: 3
