This study evaluates the potential effectiveness of an online course concerning gender-based violence prevention, which combines the bystander intervention approach and the myths-based approach. The sample consists of 67 students who participated in three measurements-before the course, immediately after the course, and 3 months later. In search of the ‘second-best solution’ to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict
This article presents an alternative approach to the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. As the one-state solution is generally unacceptable to both Israel and the Palestinians and the two-state solution does not seem to be working, the authors suggest a possible ‘second-best solution’. Under this proposal a prospective Palestinian state would extend from the Gaza Strip to adjacent parts of the Sinai Peninsula for which Egypt would re…
Economic Growth and Human Development in Developing Countries
The paper analyses the relationship between economic growth and human development in developing countries. While the former is often perceived as a necessary precondition for successful human development, the latter is regarded to be the main development objective. However, the link between economic growth and human development seems to be more complex. According to Ranis et al. (2000) the relationship is two-sided and mutually reinforcing, so in…
Measuring Pro-Poor Growth
The paper analyzes the theory and construction of four indicators of pro-poor growth and applies them to Bangladesh over two time periods, 2000-2005 and 2005-2010. The following indicators were used: pro-poor growth index (Kakwani and Pernia, 2000), poverty equivalent growth rate (Kakwani and Son, 2008), poverty growth curve (Son, 2004), and the rate of pro-poor growth (Ravallion and Chen, 2003). Applied to Bangladesh, the results of the four ind…

Sexual Harassment at Universities
In this article the authors present the main results from one of two existing Czech studies on sexual harassment at Czech universities. The research was carried out in 2008-2009 on a sample of 832 students at 11 public universities and colleges. The results indicate that 78% of students have personally experienced teacher behaviours that can be characterised as sexual harassment. However, only 3% of them said explicitly that they had been sexuall…
Toward an Explanation of Television Broadcast Restructuring in the Czech Republic
Czech television has been in ferment since the collapse of Communism in 1989. A little over a decade ago, the state monopolized television. Today, the Czech Republic has a well-developed dual broadcast system. The state continues to have a television operation but this is now institutionalized as a public broadcast corporation. Coexisting with this corporation are several private sector operations, the most successful being TV Nova. The purpose o…
