Bernard de Mandeville, Adam Smith and virtuous knaves of our times
This is the reaction on the article of VĂĄclav KlusoĹ "Come-Backs of Dr. Bernard Mandeville: Virtuous Knaves in Economic Transformation". I put in contrast economic thinking of B. Mandeville and A. Smith and argue that both Smith's social and moral philosophy and his economic thought is more relevant for our present time. Smith's system of natural liberty - free trade and free enterprise - brings the invisible hand of the markets to work and tran…
Economic analysis of law
Economic analysis of law concerns predicting impacts of legislative rules on incentives and behaviour of individuals and judging social efficiency of alternative legislative rules. It applies price theory, welfare theory and public choice theory on creating and applying law. One of its main shortcomings however is the lack of criteria of social efficiency. Modern history of economic analysis of law begins within the framework of property rights a…

Unmarried Mothers, Social Deprivation and Child Separation
The rise in the number of illegitimate births reached a peak of 69,928 in 1967 in England and Wales (6,663 in Scotland). Subsequently, numbers have steadied to between 8 and 8.5 per cent of all live births. Crellin, Pringle and West’s examination of all births during a set period suggests that about 68 per cent of illegitimate births are to unmarried mothers living alone. Using the 1971 Census, the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) …
The American Poverty Programme 1969-71
Studies of the American 'War on Poverty' have concentrated on the period 1964-8 during which it attracted much attention due, firstly, to its optimistic claims to abolish poverty and, secondly, to the militant tactics used by some of its participants. Little note has been given to the years 1969-71, yet during this period significant changes occurred. In the Spring term of 1972 I was able to visit a number of the programme's projects and to study…
Supportive Services to the Family
The British Urban Programme
Although it is now over four years since the British urban programme was initiated, available information on its origins, the details of its implementation and the extent to which it has been successful continues to be severely limited. The literature on this topic is restricted to a few critical articles which, in the main, have focussed on details of the implementation of the programme, while systematic research in this area is conspicuous for …
