  • Does Adorno Have a Theory of Fascist Thinking

  • A psychoanalytic conceptual framework for understanding populism

    Open Access•Stefan Bird-Pollan•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2023•References: 25

In this paper, I argue for two claims. The first is that all social and political thinking lies along a continuum and that the structure of each thought along the continuum is that of a basic desire for self-determination. Self-determination, I argued, occurs in a variety of ways including, importantly, at a variety of levels of intention. On the one hand, there are the relatively unreflective ways of understanding oneself as autonomous. I attrib…

  • Making Conceptual Space for the Unconscious

    Stefan Bird-Pollan•ARTICLE•Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal•2023

  • Populism, Liberalism and the Eclipse of Emotion

    Stefan Bird-Pollan•ARTICLE•Populism•2021

I argue that the way philosophy conceives of the political subject fails to understand the populist subject. In Section I, I shall sketch an ambiguity in how Hobbes conceives of the political subject as both driven by the passions and yet capable of rationally subduing them. In Section II, I argue that these two different conceptions of the will lead to different models of political representation. In Section III, I offer an sketch of some of the…

  • The Immanence of Space and History

    Stefan Bird-Pollan•ARTICLE•Parallax•2013

What can be learned from a life, especially one that was dedicated to action? The few but extraordinary writings of Frantz Fanon, who died in 1961 of leukaemia, are a meditation on just this point

  • Fanon

    Stefan Bird-Pollan•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 11

I argue that Franz Fanon can usefully be situated in the tradition of German Idealism in the sense that he takes from Kant and especially Hegel the conception of agency as something to be achieved through struggle for the ideal of humanity as self-determining. Fanon sees the suffering cased by colonial rule in Africa and elsewhere as deriving from the systematic deprivation of agency by the colonial power. Using the work of Hegel, Fanon seeks to …

  • Hegel’s grounding of intersubjectivity in the master–slave dialectic

    Open Access•Stefan Bird-Pollan, Bird-Pollan Stefan•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 9

In this article I seek to explain Hegel’s significance to contemporary meta-ethics, in particular to Kantian constructivism. I argue that in the master–slave dialectic in the Phenomenology of Spirit, Hegel shows that self-consciousness and intersubjectivity arise at the same time. This point, I argue, shows that there is no problem with taking other people’s reasons to motivate us since reflection on our aims is necessarily also reflection on the…

  • Nation state, capitalism, democracy

    Open Access•Stefan Müller-Doohm, Stefan Bird-Pollan•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This article attempts, for the first time, to link some central motives in the thought of Jürgen Habermas with the biographical experiences of the philosopher and social theorist. What are the relations which Habermas himself thematizes in his life story by means of discursive analysis? Three elements are central: the change in significance of the nation state against the backdrop of the process of European integration, the concept of a deliberat…
