Panic to TruthReview of
Henry Abramovitch has written a mystery that astonishingly replicates the process of individuation in Jungian analytical treatment. Like any mystery it focuses on uncovering clues to the problem and finding a solution. This story is assisted by the guide of the analyst and the active imagination of the client in the character of Sherlock Holmes, of all people. The book brings into question the personality and role of the analyst, the meaning of t…
Immortality, mourning and ritual
The impact of the word ‘immortality’ and its meaning unfold personally and collectively with issues pertinent to us all. This word came unexpectedly as an auditory experience to a woman who had little background or familiarity with anything religious or spiritual. She was at a crisis without knowing how to make sense of what happened to her. Sadly, she said, ‘I need more human parts as these are not developed in a relational way inside myself fro…
Narcissism – the refusal of twoness through sexual addiction and pornography
Proceeding from oneness to twoness is a psychological process of relating inter- and intrapersonally. This article links the perspectives of French psychoanalyst André Green's concepts of the dead mother and narcissism with Hester Solomon, British Jungian analyst writing on the 'as-if' personality. These concepts are elucidated with the composite example of a self-described sexually addicted man. His behaviours attempted to mask the shadows of me…
Covid‐19, precarity and loneliness
In this paper I discuss Jungian psychological work of the trauma and loss experienced in reaction to COVID-19 with a man who represents a clinical composite. The issues of precarity, a concept used by the philosopher Judith Butler, are combined with the notions of lack and absence of French psychoanalyst André Green. The psychological and societal situation of precarity aroused the man's childhood issues that were long repressed. The loneliness, …
Teaching in Poland
This article reflects my psychological and philosophical orientation as a Jungian Analyst. Through my affiliation with the international Jungian organization, I have traveled to Poland for the past four summers to teach Jungian analytical psychology. Poland is a country, like many around the world, where only a short time ago this form of education was disallowed by the government. The reality of this fact made me conscious, more than usual, that…
Metabolic abnormalities among free‐ranging Macaca mulatta on Cayo Santiago
Free‐ranging rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) were examined on the island of Cayo Santiago (CS), Puerto Rico, with intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IV‐GTTs). Results were compared to monkeys derived from the island, but subsequently housed in corrals or gang cages at Sabana Seca (SS). Glucose clearance was similar among CS and SS macaques (range 2.99 to 4.50%min); both CS and SS males had significantly greater fasting serum glucose levels (…
A nonintrusive method for determining relative body fat in free‐ranging monkeys
A procedure is described for designing simple obesity rating scales for use with free‐ranging rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ). Ratings are based on observers' judgments of degree of overall obesity of individual monkeys. The procedure was tested separately on samples of males and females over 2 successive years. Within each of these four samples, observers' judgments were both highly reliable and highly correlated with actual measures of body w…
Carbohydrate impairment and insulin secretory abnormalities among Macaca mulatta from Cayo Santiago
Rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) from Cayo Santiago were examined for evidence of carbohydrate intolerance indicative of potential development of non‐insulin‐dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Monkeys 6 to >20 years from natal Groups J, M, and P, an AGED Group (all >20 years), and unrelated monkeys removed from the island in association with other groups (CAYO), were examined with intravenous glucose tolerance tests (iv‐GTT). Morphometric mea…
