  • Is androgen deprivation therapy effective in the treatment of sex offenders

    Marnie E Rice, Grant T Harris•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2011•References: 3

We review the effects of androgen deprivation on the sexual behavior of human males. Although eunuchs have existed in many cultures over the last 4,000 years, there is scant detailed and specific information in the historical record about castration status and sexual behavior. From the literature on modern-day eunuchs who are not sex offenders, we conclude that androgen deprivation reduces sexual desire and behavior, including sexual intercourse.…

  • Sixty-Six Years of Research on the Clinical Versus Actuarial Prediction of Violence

    Open Access•N Zoe Hilton, Grant T Harris et al.•ARTICLE•The Counseling Psychologist•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 21

In their meta-analysis of clinical versus statistical prediction models, Ægisdóttir et al. (this issue) extended previous findings of statistical-method superiority across such variables as clinicians’ experience and familiarity with data. In this reaction, the authors are particularly interested in violence prediction, which yields the greatest support for actuarial models. In the past decade, actuarial prediction has continued to improve, but c…

  • Comparing effect sizes in follow-up studies: ROC Area, Cohen's d, and r.

    Marnie E Rice, Grant T Harris•ARTICLE•Law and Human Behavior•2005

In order to facilitate comparisons across follow-up studies that have used different measures of effect size, we provide a table of effect size equivalencies for the three most common measures: ROC area (AUC), Cohen's d, and r. We outline why AUC is the preferred measure of predictive or diagnostic accuracy in forensic psychology or psychiatry, and we urge researchers and practitioners to use numbers rather than verbal labels to characterize effe…

  • Predicting Wife Assault: A Critical Review and Implications for Policy and Practice

    Open Access•N Zoe Hilton, Grant T Harris•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2005

In this review, the authors examine the research evidence for the prediction of wife assault recidivism, lethal wife assault, and wife assault onset. They also review and present original data on the effect of treatment attendance on wife assault risk. Violence does not always become a stable habit, and variables associated with wife assault onset do not necessarily predict recidivism. General antisociality, psychopathy, substance abuse, and a hi…

  • The Causes Of Rape: Understanding Individual Differences In Male Propensity For Sexual Aggression (The Law and Public Policy)

Martin L Lalumière, Grant T Harris et al.•BOOK•The Causes Of Rape•2005

Examines why some men are prone to rape, offers probable causes for this inclination, and provides a comprehensive review of scientific studies of coercive sex. The authors look at evidence from studies in developmental criminology, evolutionary psychology, psychopathology, and psychophysiology and examine the situational and social factors that influence the likelihood of rape. Theories about rape have an unfortunate history of being unconstrain…

  • A Brief Actuarial Assessment for the Prediction of Wife Assault Recidivism: The Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment.

    N Zoe Hilton, Grant T Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•2004

An actuarial assessment to predict male-to-female marital violence was constructed from a pool of potential predictors in a sample of 589 offenders identified in police records and followed up for an average of almost 5 years. Archival information in several domains (offender characteristics, domestic violence history, nondomestic criminal history, relationship characteristics, victim characteristics, index offense) and recidivism were subjected …

  • The Construct of Psychopathy

    Grant T Harris, Tracey A Skilling et al.•ARTICLE•Crime and Justice•2001•Cited by: 4

As a psychological construct, psychopathy has undergone recent change, and there is still disagreement as to its fundamental character. Nevertheless, it can be reliably and validly measured with such behaviors as callousness, impulsivity, sensation seeking, dishonesty, emotional detachment, extreme selfishness, antisociality, belligerence, juvenile delinquency, and sexual promiscuity. Hare's Psychopathy Checklist-Revised is the best available ass…

  • The functions of aggression by male teenagers

N Zoe Hilton, Grant T Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2000•Cited by: 10

A selectionist theory states that violence by males toward male peers originally served specific functions and violence to female peers served others. Differences in self-reported victimization and perpetration in studies of 1.452 high school students were hypothesized. In Study 1, male-to-male aggression was reported to be more prevalent than male-to-female aggression. For male-to-male aggression, perpetrator reports agreed with or exceeded vict…

  • Violent offenders: Appraising and managing risk

    Vernon L Quinsey, Grant T Harris et al.•BOOK•Violent offenders•1998

"Predicting future violence among criminal offenders is notoriously difficult. In the first edition of their popular book Violent Offenders: Appraising and Managing Risk, Vernon L. Quinsey, Grant T. Harris, Marnie E. Rice, and Catherine A. Cormier argued that community risk management can be improved by using actuarial assessment and combining what is known about the prediction of violence, the study of clinical decision making, and the literatur…

  • Appraisal and management of risk in sexual aggressors: Implications for criminal justice policy

Grant T Harris, Marnie E Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•1998•Cited by: 5

The authors review the literature on the psychology of sex offenders, variables associated with recidivism, actuarial methods to predict recidivism, and treatment. Sexual deviance measured phallometrically can discriminate, with high accuracy, between sex offenders and other men. Sex offenders remain at risk for a long time after release, and combinations of variables selected for their cumulative efficiency in predicting recidivism have been dev…

  • The treatment of mentally disordered offenders

  • The treatment of mentally disordered offenders

    Marnie E Rice, Grant T Harris•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•1997•Cited by: 1

However narrowly defined, mentally disordered offenders (MDOs) are heterogeneous in demographics, diagnoses, offense characteristics, risk, and clinical needs. Treatment planning for MDOs should begin with an assessment of risk of future violent behavior in the community and risk of violence toward self or others inside an institution. Purposes of treatment among MDOs include treatments both to reduce risk of future violence and to alleviate the …

  • Evaluation of an Institution-based Treatment Program for Child Molesters

Marnie E Rice, Grant T Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Program…•1991

Although treatment programs for child molesters have become common, few have been subjected to rigorous evaluation. In this article we discuss issues in the evaluation of treatment programs for child molesters and then describe an evaluation of a behavioral program for child molesters treated in a maximum security psychiatric institution. The results provided no evidence of program efficacy, although support was found for the predictive validity …
