Open Access•Tom Van Ham, Otto M J Adang et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2022

Several European countries have recently been confronted with mutually arranged confrontations between hooligan groups in a predesignated setting. This article explores the significance of this form of collective violence for those involved and how this relates to existing collective violence theory. In addition to international and national questionnaires and subsequent in-depth interviews with police officials, two case studies were conducted a…

  • Determinants of Persistence in Collective Violence Offending

    Open Access•Tom Van Ham, Arjan Blokland et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 48

This study explores individual characteristics linked to an increased risk of persistence in collective violence. A sample of collective violence offenders (n = 438) was identified based on individuals' involvement in a collective violence incident in 2011/2012 or due to them being recorded in a police database of 'known' football hooligans. For the current analyses, persistence was defined as recidivism to collective violence assessed over a 4- …

  • Contextual and Individual Factors Determining Escalation of Collective Violence: Case Study of the Project X Riot in Haren, the Netherlands

Otto M J Adang, Otto Adang et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2015•References: 14

Two dominant perspectives explaining collective violence differ in the extent to which they ascribe influence to individual and contextual factors. Our analysis of a project X disorder in the Netherlands shows organized groups were not involved. Instead spontaneous group formation and identification were observed, confirming socio-contextual theory. Arrested suspects, however, were no cross section of youths, with a minority mirroring the persona…

  • Police and citizens in conflict: Exploring post-confrontation interaction from a relational perspective

Misja van de Klomp, Sara Stronks et al.•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•2014•References: 7

This paper introduces a relational perspective to the analysis of the interaction process from confrontation to cooperation between police and civilians. By exploring a single case study on riots between Dutch youths of Moluccan descent and the police during New Year's Eve 2007, followed by a peaceful celebration a year later in 2008, the process of reconciliation between the two groups is reconstructed and analysed. By means of a comparison of t…

  • An integrated approach to crowd psychology and public order policing

Open Access•Stephen Reicher, Clifford Stott et al.•ARTICLE•Policing: An International…•2004

This paper uses recent developments in crowd psychology as the basis for developing new guidelines for public order policing. Argues that the classical view of all crowd members as being inherently irrational and suggestible, and therefore potentially violent, is both wrong and potentially dangerous. It can lead to policing strategies that respond to the violence of some in the crowd by clamping down on all members, and therefore lead all members…
