Victimization among Justice-Involved Youth with Behavioral and Learning Needs
The current study investigates the association between behavioral and learning needs and victimization among a sample of justice-involved youth. Drawing from a large data set of adolescents involved in the justice system, bivariate and multivariable analyses explore how behavioral and learning needs are associated with victimization, including trauma, neglect, and violence exposure. Youth with justice involvement who have behavioral and learning …
Opioid Agonist Treatment Recipients within Criminal Justice-Involved Populations
Background: In 2014, nearly 2.5 million Americans had a substance use disorder for opioids (e.g., prescription pain medication or heroin) with over half estimated to have had prior contact with the criminal justice system. Despite strong evidence that opioid agonist treatment (OAT) is effective in reducing overdose, increasing treatment retention, and improving physical health and well-being outcomes, the use of OAT among justice-involved individ…
A Content Analysis of Prison Websites
Across much of Latin America, prison systems are characterized as having significantly high incarceration and overcrowding rates. In recent years, some of these systems have sought to address such problems by implementing rehabilitation and early release programs. However, the extent to which rehabilitation has been embraced and the nature of said efforts is not known. Using content analysis methods, this exploratory study examines the existence …

Condition comprehension predicts compliance for adolescents under probation supervision
Noncompliance is a chronic problem among youth court ordered to probation supervision, often placing them in jeopardy of deeper involvement with the juvenile justice system. Legal comprehension theory and goal setting theory suggests that youth understanding of their probation requirements may predict compliance. This study explored the effect of condition comprehension on short-term compliance with probation requirements in a sample of probation…
What Works (and Doesn't) in Reducing Recidivism
Drug Courts and the Criminal Justice System
Drug courts—a rare success story in the criminal justice system—are generally credited with reducing recidivism and providing a lower-cost alternative to incarceration. They have also spawned the development of other specialty courts. The authors of Drug Courts and the Criminal Justice System provide a comprehensive analysis of just how drug courts work, systematically examining the model and exploring its broader significance.
Assessing the Quality of Doctoral Education
It was with great interest that I read Kleck and Mims (2016) recent analysis of doctoral faculty productivity. Despite the inherent limitations to quantifying the quality of doctoral education, I
What Works (and Doesn't) in Reducing Recidivism
This book offers criminologists and students an evidence-based discussion of the latest trends in corrections. Over the last several decades, research has clearly shown that rehabilitation efforts can be effective at reducing recidivism among criminal offenders. However, researchers also recognize that treatment is not a "one size fits all" approach. Offenders vary by gender, age, crime type, and/or addictions, to name but a few, and these indivi…
