Corruption in the Public Sector—An International Perspective
Remittances and International Development
This is a first of its kind book which examines the remittances in the two largest corridors in the World: India-Saudi Arabia and Mexico-U.S.A. This book aims to treat remittances as an act of social norm involving individuals, nation-states, and diaspora communities. It treats remittances both as an act of individual obligation as well as a social fact that needs to be understood from the perspective of the actors, i.e., the givers and recipient…
Impact of Race/Ethnicity, Veteran Status, and Place of Birth on Attitudes Towards Welfare Recipients
The current study explored the differences in the public's attitudes and emotions towards welfare recipients based on their race/ethnicity, birthplace, and veteran status. Participants read a mock news story created for the current study about a woman labeled as a "welfare queen" who was receiving assistance, but persuaded the reader to be sympathetic to her case. The mock news story varied based on the race/ethnicity, veteran status, and birthpl…
Al Rashid Mosque
Written with a historical perspective, this book is a good addition to the literature on Muslim institutions in North America. Earle H Waugh has offered a close examination of Al Rashid Mosque in Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. The Al Rashid mosque, built by the Lebanese in the 1930s, offers a unique window through which to examine the origins and growth of 20th-and 21st-century Islam in Canada. As Waugh points out, the story of the Al Rashid mosque…
What is a Madrasa? By Ebrahim Moosa
What went wrong" is often the question asked by Western intellectuals when they seek to unravel or demystify the Muslim world. When asking this question, many Western intellectuals-not all-seek to contrast their understanding of Islam, Muslim practices, and its cultural milieu with the enlightenment of the West, as well as the growth of democracy and its deficit in Muslim-majority countries. This is also Moosa's starting point for his analysis, how…

Old and New Forms of Giving
Corporate philanthropy in India is burgeoning due to a fast growing economy, rise in the number of billionaires, and the recent introduction of legislation that mandates spending 2 % of company profits on corporate social responsibility. Through analysis of key historical and anthropological texts, we argue that ‘business philanthropy has a long and honorable history in India’ (Sidel, Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Org…
Re-examining the Policies in the Humanitarian Aid Sector – A Call for Greater “Value Rationality”
Faith-based giving in the U.S. constitutes over one-third of all charity (Giving USA, 2013). The proliferation of policy initiatives that promoted faith-based giving and giving to humanitarian aid organizations post George W Bush’s establishment of the Office of Faith-based initiatives and community Partnerships has been controversial, to say the least. But despite this, the sector has been robust. One segment of philanthropy that has been unnece…
New Styles of Community Building and Philanthropy by Arab-American Muslims
Among Arab-American Muslims, secular ethnic and humanitarian giving, focused on ‘results’ and ‘measurable impact,’ is displacing religiously inspired giving, that is driven by ‘charity’ and ‘love of mankind.’ This trend is supported by evidence of the way donors position themselves and philanthropic organizations appeal to their donor base. The case is supported by qualitative data drawn from interviews with key informants and from trend data on …
