  • West Africa and the Rise of Asante: Rivers of Gold, a Short Route to China, and the Globalization of Labor

    Open Access•Jon D Carlson•CHAPTER•Myths, State Expansion, and the…•2012

W est Africa is a more complex case than Nootka Sound in several ways. While external to the system, the region is in closer proximity to the European continent. Thus, we can presume a certain amount of information diffusion between the Europe and West Africa via intermediary and tertiary actors. Because it is adjacent, the period of interaction is longer than that of Nootka Sound. This case may actually offer a greater ability to track the vario…

  • Externality and Incorporation in the World-System: Abyssinia - Anomaly or Palimpsest

    Open Access•Jon D Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of World-Systems Research•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This article examines the concept of the external arena and the role of the information network in the expansion of the world-system and incorporation of new regions. To address systemic incorporation, I reference research on nested networks of interaction, and echo criticisms that the impact of myth and misinformation has been underappreciated as an element of incorporation. Significant alteration occurs well-prior to the point at which most wor…

    Jon D Carlson•ARTICLE•Political Communication•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Postcards are an important resource that has been largely overlooked in mainstream research on historical events, political attitudes, perceptions, propaganda, and communication. Accordingly, this article expands the relevance of the postcard from social artifact to historical document embodying social and political messages. In particular, the article examines the images and representations used in cartographic postcards during and after the Rus…

This article examines the concept of the external arena , the relationship it holds to the expansion of the modern world-system, and the process of systemic incorporation. In order to address the notion of systemic expansion, I examine how boundaries of the system are de?ned by networks of exchange and interaction and I echo criticisms that information and luxury goods networks exert important systemic impacts. Signi?cant change occurs well prior…

    Jon D Carlson•ARTICLE•Public Integrity•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This article offers a framework for using Kohlberg's moral development theory to understand the international phenomenon of peace between democratic nations. It takes this individualistic theory and expands it into the international dimension, arguing that societies also embody moral norms. Understanding societal norms offers an expl…

  • Broadening and Deepening: Systemic Expansion, Incorporation and the Zone of Ignorance

    Open Access•Jon D Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of World-Systems Research•2001•Cited by: 6•References: 23

I intend to address a critical element of world-systems theory, and in doing so illuminate some larger concerns with international relations theory in general. Speci?cally, I will be examining the concept of the external arena and its relation to the international system as an expanding whole. The goal is to re-think the incorporation of new regions ( states and peoples) into the world-system in order to understand world-system processes more com…
