  • No(r)way? Language Learning, Stereotypes, and Social Inclusion Among Poles in Norway

    Open Access•Anne Golden, Toril Opsahl•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 11

This study recognizes the diversity and heterogeneous nature of a migrant group that long has been portrayed and perceived in a limited way, for instance in Norwegian media, without considering the multifaceted nature of the group in question. Drawing on data from focus group interviews, we apply narrative analysis to shed light on the impact stereotypes surrounding Poles have on Polish adult migrants’ striving for social inclusion and profession…

  • “One, Two, Many = One too many?” Conceptualizations of mother tongue

Open Access•Anne Golden, Toril Opsahl et al.•ARTICLE•Oslo Studies in Language•2021

In this article, we analyze the use of the term ‘morsmål’ (‘mother tongue’) in official Norwegian documents and in media texts to identify if and how its conceptualization has changed in the era of increasing globalization. Our point of view is explorative. When examining our data, we highlight the importance of reflecting openly about the instability of powerful concepts. We highlight two partly conflicting conceptualizations that we name the ‘t…

  • Metaphor in education

Open Access•Katrin Ahlgren, Anne Golden et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2021

This special issue explores the use of metaphor in education from a multilingual perspective in two Scandinavian countries, Norway and Sweden. In this introduction, we include a brief overview of earlier research in the domain and identify common factors noteworthy to discuss in relation to the multilingual context, for instance, the notion of creativity and speaker legitimacy in a second language context. The issue includes six articles comprisi…

  • Mashi – this language was in my ears

Open Access•Anne Golden, Guri Bordal Steien et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2021

In order to understand the process of learning new languages as adults, we need to take into account learners’ past experiences with all of their language(s), as such experiences shape attitudes and conceptualizations. In this paper, we present an analysis of metaphorical expressions in the narrated linguistic biographies of (former) refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in Norway. The participants speak a multitude of languages, e…

  • The relationship between topic and metaphor in second-language learners’ essays

    Open Access•Anne Golden•ARTICLE•Metaphor and the Social World•2021

In this article I investigate to what extent the use of metaphorical expressions in language learners’ texts vary according to the topic they have chosen to write about. The data come from the Norwegian learner corpus ASK, where the texts are from written assignments produced by adult second-language learners as part of an official Norwegian test and texts. Texts from two different prompts are selected, which are related to friendship and nature.…

  • Metaphors of culture

    Anne Golden, Elizabeth Lanza•ARTICLE•Intercultural Pragmatics•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 5

  • On the Ethics of At-Will Employment in the Public Sector

    Richard Green, Robert E Forbis et al.•ARTICLE•Public Integrity•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 23

Some public agencies are substituting at-will employment relations for civil service protection. At-will employees can be dismissed for any reason or no reason at all. Proponents see it as a way to improve managerial flexibility and efficiency, and to motivate employees to work harder under competitive conditions similar to those in the private sector. Such claims may seem attractive in this era of budgetary deficits and fiscal conservatism, but …

  • Tick the Box Please

    Open Access•Louise Ryan, Anne Golden•ARTICLE•Sociology•2006•Cited by: 19•References: 9

This article considers the value of reflexivity in relation to a quantitative research project which we worked on as contract researchers. Reflexivity in the research process has been discussed by social scientists for over three decades. However, many quantitative researchers continue to avoid explicit forms of reflexivity, especially in relation to data collection. We discuss our specific experiences and also raise general questions about the a…

  • Vocabulary learning and instruction in a second or foreign language

    Open Access•Heewon Kang, Anne Golden•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This article discusses major issues concerning vocabulary learning and instruction. The different “knowings” that constitute knowledge of a word are discussed, with the point made that students should develop a depth as well as a breadth of knowledge of vocabulary. Different ways that vocabulary is taught in the classroom are briefly reviewed. Though direct vocabulary teaching methods play an important role, students are the best judges of which …

  • Experiments with Language-based Aids in Information Retrieval Systems

Open Access•Tove Fjeldvig, Anne Golden•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1988

The fact that a lexeme can appear in various forms causes problems in information retrieval. As a solution to this problem, we have developed methods for automatic root lemmatization, automatic truncation and automatic splitting of compound words. All the methods have as their basis a set of rules which contain information regarding inflected and derived forms of words – and not a dictionary. The methods have been tested on several collections of…
