Political (Re)Learning and Consumer Culture in Post-GDR Society
Private consumption may be seen both as a means of individual social legitimation and as an expression of collective values and identities. As such, consumer behaviour may evidence the nature and extent of adaptation of political values and orientations during periods of political transition. This study identifies and analyses recent trends in consumer behaviour in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) as expressions of identity adaptation.…
‘How Happy are You …?’ Subjective Well-Being in East Germany Twenty Years after Unification
Since the unification of Germany in 1990, East Germans have largely approximated the characteristics of the ‘happiness profile’ — but not the overall levels of happiness – of West Germans. Current patterns of subjective well-being among East Germans raise concerns about the contingency of identification with the democratic system of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG); the further entrenchment of financial jealousies between East and West Germa…
Devolution, change and European union policy‐making in the UK
This paper explores the extent to which European Union policy-making in the UK has changed as a result of devolution. The paper draws on material concerning economic development and the structural funds, agriculture and rural development, and environmental policy. The extent to which there has been a change in the outcomes (content and impact) of policy is examined. Evidence from Scotland, Wales, the English regions and UK central government reve…
The chancellor-candidates and the campaign
The ‘presidentialisation’ of recent federal elections has made the selection and performance of the ‘chancellor-candidates’ for the SPD and CDU/CSU an increasingly important factor in German electoral politics. In the 2002 election, the chancellor-candidates assumed an unusually prominent role as their leadership and media skills were tested by the key events of the campaign, in particular the ‘flood of the century’ (Jahrhundertflut) and the Iraq…
After the GDR: Reconstructing identity in post‐communist Germany
The task of reconstructing political identity in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) is influenced by the former polity's unique transition experience of ‘democratization through unification’ with the pre‐existing Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in 1990. Special features of contemporary eastern German identity derive from a dual historical context consisting of the memory of life under state socialism and the memory and continuing exper…
Citizenship controversies in Germany: The twin legacy ofVölkischnationalism and theAlleinvertretungsanspruch
For many Germans, citizenship is a problematic and emotive issue, as is demonstrated by the controversies generated around current attempts to modernise and ‘normalise’ German citizenship law. This article looks to German history to account for the failure of successive governments to effect such change. It asserts that two key historical developments have been decisive in stalling a ‘normal’ western European pattern of policy development in this…
Devolution and EU Policy Making: The Territorial Challenge
This paper seeks to document the impact of structural and organisational change brought about through devolution on the UK's handling of European policy, and thereby to illustrate the nature of the new multi-level governance in the devolving UK. In the context of arrangements prior to devolution, we examine distinctive features of the new constitutional and structural framework of EU policy-making; the guidelines and conventions for the multi-lev…
