  • ‘Carefree enjoyment - can you tick that box?’ A story of thriving following experiences of abusive coaching in gymnastics

Open Access•Lauren J Cleave, Daniel J Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2025

Within this paper, we aim to utilise a creative analytical practice to embody the experience of thriving and show the ways in which the coach-athlete relationship may influence an athlete’s ability to thrive. By using an evocative autoethnographic approach, we hope to connect the reader to the thoughts, emotions, and feelings of a gymnast. To achieve this, I, the first author, used three main strategies to build the story presented in this study:…

  • A ticket to a very different show

    Open Access•Michaela Kousalova, Christopher R D Wagstaff et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2025•References: 45

Dear reader, if you are reading this, it means you have received my invitation for tonight's poetic ethnodrama performed in the theater of your mind. But before we start the play, I want you to reflect on what comes to mind when you think about 'Women's Artistic Gymnastics.' Please keep these thoughts in mind as you experience tonight's performance, which will start in 10 minutes. This play, which stems from longitudinal ethnographic research, is…

  • Measuring emotional contagion as a multidimensional construct

    Open Access•Beth G Clarkson, Christopher R D Wagstaff et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2024•References: 4

We offer an alternative conceptualization of the construct of susceptibility to emotional contagion and four related studies where two separate measures were developed and initially validated. The Contagion of Affective Phenomena Scale-General (CAPS-G) is a 5-item scale that measures the general susceptibility to the contagion of affect, and the Contagion of Affective Phenomena Scale - Emotion (CAPS-E) assesses six distinct emotions. Study 1 gene…

  • ‘We are all in this together’

Open Access•Samantha J Meredith, Samantha Meredith et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2023

In this study we aimed to explore older adults’ experience of community-based power assisted (PA) exercise and its potential impact on social exclusion, isolation and loneliness (SEI&L). The lead author obtained ethnographic data over a 6-month period using three primary methods: participant observation (900 hours), a reflexive diary, and 10 semi-structured interviews. Participant observation provided a rich lens into a PA exercise centre describ…

  • Impacting and being impacted by overuse injuries

Francesca Cavallerio, Ross Wadey et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2022

The aim of this study was to explore the experience of parents of gymnasts suffering from overuse injuries. The work is part of a wider ethnographic project, with 43 participants (16 gymnasts, 3 coaches, 1 physiotherapist, 22 parents, 1 manager), which investigated the psychosocial factors affecting the development of overuse injuries in gymnasts. Data collection began with observations, formal and informal interviews, and a focus group, which we…

  • Member reflections with elite coaches and gymnasts

Francesca Cavallerio, Ross Wadey et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2020

This paper is a confessional tale that focuses on challenges encountered during the process of conducting member reflections, and on the lessons learned from these. Recent discussions on enhancing the rigor of qualitative research conducted from an interpretivist stance encourage the use of member reflections, rather than the previously widely adopted member checking. Yet, practical examples of how to use this technique are scarce in the sport, e…

  • Leadership and the contagion of affective phenomena

    Open Access•Beth G Clarkson, Christopher R D Wagstaff et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•2020

We present a systematic review of literature examining leadership and the contagion of affective phenomena, namely emotion, mood, and affect. Specifically, an inductive thematic analysis approach was adopted to synthesize the findings from published studies. In addition, a mini meta‐analysis was conducted to quantify reported effects. A rigorous search identified 25 studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria for further review. Results highlig…

  • Getting to the heart of the matter

Samantha J Meredith, Samantha Meredith et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2019

Considering the detrimental impact of emotional suffering on patient recovery (e.g. increased mortality rates), a key component in rehabilitation settings should be the promotion of psychosocial health. Research has shown cardiac rehabilitation (CR) to decrease anxiety and depression, enhance emotional well-being and reduce the deleterious effects of negative emotions on prognosis. Nevertheless, limited attention has been given to heart disease a…

Open Access•Sarah Gilmore, Christopher Wagstaff et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 23

This article gives a rare account of the working life of a sports psychologist in the English Premier League, the elite division in English professional football. It shows how members of emerging professions such as sports psychology are a new precariat. John is more successful than many sports psychologists, but his job security is dependent on his continued ability to navigate managerial change: using his skills as a psychologist in the defence…

  • Adjusting to retirement from sport

Francesca Cavallerio, Ross Wadey et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2017

This study used narrative inquiry to understand the retirement experiences of rhythmic gymnasts. Eight female former competitive gymnasts (M age = 24.5, SD = 8.33) each participated in four life-history interviews. Following dialogical narrative analysis, three narrative typologies were outlined: Entangled Narrative, Going Forward Narrative and Making Sense Narrative. The entangled narrative shows an individual with a monological athletic identit…

  • The state of qualitative research in health and social science literature

    Caroline Bradbury-Jones, Jenna P Breckenridge et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 21

Pluralism and creativity are inherent and important parts of the qualitative endeavour. The multiplicity of approaches and methods can, however, be confusing. We undertook a focused mapping review and synthesis to obtain a snap-shot profile of the state of qualitative research in health and social science literature. We retrieved 102 qualitative articles published between January and March 2015 from six leading health and social science journals.…

However, explorations of its application from a researcher's perspective are scarce. This paper provides reflections on the experiences of eight individual researchers using IPA in diverse disciplinary fields and cultures. The research studies were conducted in the USA, Malaysia, Australia, New Zea…
