  • Wet deposition of 7 Be and 10 Be in Xi’an, China

Open Access•Xinyi Du, Yunchong Fu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2025•References: 47

Cosmogenic 7 Be and 10 Be are effective tracers for studying atmospheric dynamics and Earth’s surface processes, with over 90% of these isotopes reaching the surface via wet deposition. However, the characteristics and influencing factors of 7 Be and 10 Be wet deposition remain unclear in different regions, limiting the precision of these nuclides as tracers of environmental change. This study analyzes the annual variation of 7 Be and 10 Be wet d…

  • The Progress of 14 C-Ams Analysis for Ultra-Small Samples at Xi’an Ams Center

Open Access•Hua Du, Yunchong Fu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 45

As there exists a growing demand for chronological research and tracer applications using radiocarbon ( 14 C) analyses of samples smaller than 100 μg C, a compact micro-specific hydrogen graphitization method has been developed at the Xi’an Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Center. This article describes the performance of the system and the mass of carbon background produced during ultra-small sample preparation. Furthermore, we discuss the re…

  • Stepped-Combustion 14 C Dating in Loess-Paleosol Sediment

    Open Access•Peng Cheng, Yunchong Fu•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 53

In this study, low temperature (room temperature, 400°C LT) and high temperature (400–900°C HT) of bulk organic carbon samples were dated from two loess and paleosol profiles. The results showed that radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates of the LT were younger than HT fractions, indicating effect of younger contamination from overlying layers. The δ 13 C variation of the HT fraction appears to respond much more sensitively to climate change, and 14 C ages of…

  • Cosmogenic 10 Be surface exposure dating of ‘Little Ice Age’ glacial events in the Mount Jaggang area, central Tibet

    Open Access•Guocheng Dong, Weijian Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The timing and extent of ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) glacial advances on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are critical for understanding climate during the past millennium. However, the lack of LIA chronologies in central Tibet makes it difficult to fully understand the nature of LIA throughout the TP. In this study, two presumed LIA moraines in the east of Mount Jaggang, Xainza range, the central TP, were examined and dated using 10 Be surface exposure datin…

  • Low-Flow Pressure Gradient Pumping for Active Absorption of CO 2 on a Molecular Sieve

Open Access•Peng Cheng, Shugang Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•References: 30

The authors have developed an active absorption system combining a molecular sieve with a pressure gradient as a way to overcome the shortcomings of the phosphoric acid solution displacement method. Taking advantage of the pressure gradient produced between the inside and outside of a bottle, as water moves through it, CO 2 in the atmosphere can actively be absorbed onto a molecular sieve in its pathway. A comparative study showed that the techni…

  • A Case Study Using 10 Be- 26 Al Exposure Dating at the Xi’an AMS Center

Open Access•Li Zhang, Zhenkun Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 33

Exposure age dating using in situ 10 Be and 26 Al is a very useful technique for dating fluvial terraces. This is especially true in semiarid regions where other methods suffer from a paucity of suitable dating materials. This article describes sample preparation procedures and analytical benchmarks established at the Xi’an Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Center for the study of in situ 10 Be and 26 Al. Four intercomparison samples were analy…

  • Preliminary Investigation on the Rapid and Direct AMS Measurement of 129 I in Environmental Samples without Chemical Separation

Open Access•Qi Liu, Xiaolei Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2016•References: 18

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the most sensitive method for measuring 129 I in environmental samples available today, with a detection limit of about 10 –15 for 129 I/ 127 I. A drawback of the technique is the time-consuming chemical separation required to prepare AMS targets from raw samples. This step significantly limits applications requiring rapid analyses and large numbers of samples, for example, in monitoring studies associated w…

  • High-Level 14 C Contamination and Recovery at Xi'an AMS Center

Open Access•Weijian Zhou, Shugang Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 3

A sample with a radiocarbon concentration estimated to be greater than 10 5 times Modern was inadvertently graphitized and measured in the Xi'an AMS system last year. Both the sample preparation lines and the ion source system were seriously contaminated and a series of cleaning procedures were carried out to remove the contamination from them. After repeated and careful cleaning as well as continuous flushing with dead CO 2 gas, both systems hav…
