  • Holocene deglaciation and glacier readvances on the Fildes Peninsula and King George Island (Isla 25 de Mayo), South Shetland Islands, NW Antarctic Peninsula

    Open Access•Pablo Heredia Barión, Stephen J Robert et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 36

To provide insights into glacier-climate dynamics of the South Shetland Islands (SSI), NW Antarctic Peninsula, we present a new deglaciation and readvance model for the Bellingshausen Ice Cap (BIC) on Fildes Peninsula and for King George Island/Isla 25 de Mayo (KGI) ~62°S. Deglaciation on KGI began after c. 15 cal. ka BP and had progressed to within present-day limits on the Fildes Peninsula, its largest ice-free peninsula, by c. 6.6–5.3 cal. ka …

  • Changes in Holocene climate and the intensity of Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds based on a high-resolution palynological record from sub-Antarctic South Georgia

    Open Access•Stephanie L Strother, Ulrich Salzmann et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Sub-Antarctic South Georgia is a key region for studying climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere, because of its position at the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind belt and between the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Polar Frontal Zone. Here, we present a 5.8-m long high-resolution pollen record from Fan Lake on Annenkov Island dominated by local sub-polar vegetation, with Acaena and Poaceae being present throughout the la…

  • Antarctic climate change and the environment

    Open Access•John Turner, Nicholas E Barrand et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 162

We present an update of the ‘key points’ from the Antarctic Climate Change and the Environment (ACCE) report that was published by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in 2009. We summarise subsequent advances in knowledge concerning how the climates of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean have changed in the past, how they might change in the future, and examine the associated impacts on the marine and terrestrial biota. We also inc…

  • Lake highstands in the Pensacola Mountains and Shackleton Range 4300–2250 cal. yr BP

    Open Access•Dominic Hodgson, Dominic A Hodgson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•References: 3

We surveyed and dated the former shorelines of one lake in the Shackleton Range and two lakes in the Pensacola Mountains, situated inland of the Weddell Sea embayment Antarctica between 80° and 85°S. These are amongst the highest latitude lakes in the Antarctic and are located in areas where there is little or no Holocene climate and hydrological information. Surveys of the lake shorelines show that past water levels have been up to 15.7, 17.7 an…

  • A record of Holocene glacial and oceanographic variability in Neny Fjord, Antarctic Peninsula

    Open Access•Claire S Allen, Lisa Oakes-Fretwell et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Analyses of a 12 m marine sediment core from Neny Fjord, Marguerite Bay, Antarctic Peninsula (68.2571°S, 66.9617°W), yield a high-resolution record of Holocene climate variability. The sediments preserve signals of past glacial and marine environments and offer a unique insight into atmospheric and oceanic forcings on the western Antarctic Peninsula climate. Dating of basal material reveals that deglaciation of the fjord occurred prior to 9040 ca…

  • Relative sea-level history from the Lambert Glacier region, East Antarctica, and its relation to deglaciation and Holocene glacier readvance

Open Access•Elie Verleyen, Dominic Hodgson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

We present a relative sea-level (RSL) history, constrained by AMS radiocarbon-dated marine–freshwater transitions in isolation basins from a site adjacent to the Lambert Glacier, East Antarctica. The RSL data suggest an initial ice retreat between c. 15,370 and 12,660 cal yr B.P Within this period, meltwater pulse IA (mwp IA, between c. 14,600–14,200 and 14,100–13,700 cal yr B.P.) occurred; an exceptionally large ice melting event, inferred from …

  • Late Quaternary climate-driven environmental change in the Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica, multi-proxy evidence from a lake sediment core

    Open Access•Dominic A Hodgson, Elie Verleyen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Little is known about the response of terrestrial East Antarctica to climate changes during the last glacial–interglacial cycle. Here we present a continuous sediment record from a lake in the Larsemann Hills, situated on a peninsula believed to have been ice-free for at least 40,000 yr. A mutli-proxy data set including geochronology, diatoms, pigments and carbonate stable isotopes indicates warmer and wetter conditions than present in the early …

  • Coastal oceanographic conditions in the Prydz Bay region (East Antarctica) during the Holocene recorded in an isolation basin

    Open Access•Elie Verleyen, Dominic Hodgson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•References: 3

Information on East Antarctic coastal environments during the Holocene is relatively sparse. This is surprising as sedimentary records from the interface between land and sea can provide chronologies of climatic change, isostatic uplift, relative sea level and the colonization of newly formed biomes. Here we examine a sediment core from Pup Lagoon, a coastal lake in the Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica. Sediment stratigraphy, fossil pigments and …

  • Palynological evidence for Holocene palaeoenvironments from the lower Gordon River valley, in the World Heritage Area of southwest Tasmania

    Open Access•Katherine J Harle, Dominic Hodgson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•References: 5

A Holocene palaeoenvironmental history from the World Heritage Area of southwest Tasmania is reconstructed using an 8000-year palynological record from Lake Fidler, a small meromictic lake adjacent to the lower reaches of the Gordon River. The sequence indicates that cool temperate rainforest has remained dominant in the region for at least the last 8000 years, confirming the wilderness value of this important conservation area. There is little e…
