  • Ecological insights from plant and animal assemblages from a Late Bronze/Early Iron Age channel stratigraphy in the Kyzylkum Desert of Uzbekistan

Open Access•Roberta Pini, Lorenzo Castellano et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026

The Kyzylkum Desert of Uzbekistan preserves former branches of the Zerafshan River that once supported settlements such as the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age site of Kimirek-kum 1 (KK1). Here we reconstruct past ecosystems surrounding KK1 through multiproxy analysis of a stratified channel deposit, Trench H-2, that formed part of the site’s circular enclosure. The sequence was investigated using 14 C and OSL dating, sediment composition and grain-siz…

  • Plant distribution and modern pollen deposition across an elevation eco-gradient: The lesson learnt from a case study in the Italian Alps

    Open Access•Valentina Fontana, Giulia Furlanetto et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•References: 17

This study investigates the distribution of vegetation and its modern pollen representation along an elevation gradient in the Italian Alps and explores the relationships with terrain and climate variables. Moss polsters were collected at 25 sites between ca. 300 and 1400 m asl from open areas, deciduous, and conifer forests. At each site vegetation was surveyed at 1.8 and 10 m radius according to the Braun-Blanquet method. Climatic data, bioclim…

  • Hunter-gatherers across the great Adriatic-Po region during the Last Glacial Maximum: Environmental and cultural dynamics

Open Access•M Peresani, Giovanni Monegato et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • An overview of Alpine and Mediterranean palaeogeography, terrestrial ecosystems and climate history during MIS 3 with focus on the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition

Federica Badino, Roberta Pini et al.•PREPRINT•2020•References: 59

This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge about the millennial scale climate variability characterizing Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) in S-Europe and the Mediterranean area and its effects on terrestrial ecosystems. The sequence of Dansgaard-Oeschger events, as recorded by Greenland ice cores and recognizable in isotope profiles from speleothems and high-resolution palaeoecological records, led to dramatic variations in glacier extent…

  • Human settlement and vegetation-climate relationships in the Greenland Stadial 5 at the Piovesello site (Northern Apennines, Italy)

Open Access•M Peresani, Cesare Ravazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

The Gravettian settlements of Europe are considered as an expression of human adaptation to harsh climates. In Southern Europe, however, favorable vegetation-climate conditions supported hunters-gatherer subsistence and the maintenance of their large-scale networks. This was also the case of the North-Adriatic plain and the Apennine mountain ridge in Italy. Traditionally considered lacking evidence, the northern part of the Apennine ridge has rec…

  • Charred honeycombs discovered in Iron Age Northern Italy. A new light on boat beekeeping and bee pollination in pre-modern world

Open Access•Lorenzo Castellano, Cesare Ravazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 4

  • The first continuous Late Glacial – Holocene peat bog multi-proxy record from the Dolomites (NE Italian Alps)

Luisa Poto, Jacopo Gabrieli et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • From the Eemian to the last Late Glacial: A continuous lake record from N-Italy

    Open Access•Roberta Pini•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Circum-Mediterranean fire activity and climate changes during the mid-Holocene environmental transition (8500-2500 cal. BP)

    Open Access•Boris Vannière, Mitchell J Power et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 19•References: 46

A mid- to late-Holocene synthesis of fire activity from the Mediterranean basin explores the linkages among fire, climate variability and seasonality through several climatic and ecological transitions. Regional fire histories were created from 36 radiocarbon-dated sedimentary charcoal records, available from the Global Charcoal Database. During the mid-Holocene ‘Thermal Maximum’ around 7500—4500 cal. BP, charcoal records from the northern Medite…

  • Optically stimulated luminescence dating of a stratigraphic Late Glacial–Holocene sequence in the Po plain (Bubano quarry, Bologna, Italy)

  • Quaternary Stratigraphy and Evolution of the Alpine Region and the Mediterranean area in the European and Global Framework

Open Access•Roberta Pini, Giuseppe Orombelli et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2008

  • Magnetostratigraphic dating of an intensification of glacial activity in the southern Italian Alps during Marine Isotope Stage 22

Open Access•Giovanni Muttoni, Cesare Ravazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

We applied magnetostratigraphy and mammal biostratigraphy to date climate-sensitive pollen cycles and lithostratigraphic units of the Pliocene–Pleistocene Leffe sedimentary succession from the Southern Alps, Italy. The Leffe section was correlated to additional sections (Casnigo, Fornaci di Ranica, and Pianengo) to construct a stratigraphic network along a common fluviatile system (the Serio River) sourced in the Southern Alps and flowing southwa…

  • Evidence of a two-fold glacial advance during the last glacial maximum in the Tagliamento end moraine system (eastern Alps)

Open Access•Giovanni Monegato, Cesare Ravazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

The glacial history of the Tagliamento morainic amphitheater (southeastern Alpine foreland, Italy) during the last glacial maximum (LGM) has been reconstructed by means of a geological survey and drillings, radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis in the amphitheater and in the sandur. Two phases of glacial culmination, separated by a distinct recession, are responsible for glacial landforms and related sediments in the outer part of the amphitheat…

  • A new Late-glacial site with Picea abies in the northern Apennine foothills: An exception to the model of glacial refugia of trees
