Reconstructions of surface ocean conditions from the northeast Atlantic and Nordic seas during the last millennium
We undertake the first comprehensive effort to integrate North Atlantic marine climate records for the last millennium, highlighting some key components common within this system at a range of temporal and spatial scales. In such an approach, careful consideration needs to be given to the complexities inherent to the marine system. Composites therefore need to be hydrographically constrained and sensitive to both surface water mass variability an…
Mid- to late-Holocene oxygen isotopes from Voldafjorden, western Norway
Basin water in deep-silled Norwegian fjords is primarily influenced by inflowing Atlantic water originating from the Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC). Previous studies suggest that benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope records from such fjords are strongly influenced by variability in this current. The present paper presents a mid- to late-Holocene record (6–2.2 ka) with 17-yr time resolution from a western Norwegian deep-silled fjord, Voldafjord…
Late-Holocene changes in ocean circulation and climate
A 278 cm long sediment core spanning the last 5500 years was collected from 440 m water depth in Sulafjorden, western Norway. Detailed analyses of benthonic foraminfera, stable isotopes and lithology have been performed on the core, and a chronology based on five AMS dates on benthonic foraminifera has been established. The foraminiferal assemblages consist of species that are common in the North Sea region today. The benthonic fauna seems to res…
Do Greenland Ice Cores Reflect NW European Interglacial Climate Variations?
The climatic evolution during the Eemian and the Holocene in western Europe is compared with the sea-surface conditions in the Norwegian Sea and with the oxygen-isotope-derived paleotemperature signal in the GRIP and Renland ice cores from Greenland. The records show a warm phase (ca. 3000 yr long) early in the Eemian (substage 5e). This suggests that the Greenland ice sheet, in general, recorded the climate in the region during this time. Rapid …
New Faunal and Isotopic Evidence on the Late Weichselian—Holocene Oceanographic Changes in the Norwegian Sea
Downcore studies of planktonic and benthonic foraminifera and δ 18 O and δ 13 C in the planktonic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) in two piston cores from the southern part of the Norwegian Sea suggest large changes in the oceanic circulation pattern at the end of oxygenisotope stage 2 and in the early part of stage 1. Prior to oxygen-isotope Termination IA (16,000–13,000 yr B.P.), an isolated watermass with lower oxygen content an…
