  • Implications of submonthly oxygen and carbon isotope variations in late Pleistocene Melanopsis shells for regional and local hydroclimate in the upper Jordan River valley

Open Access•Addison Rice, Elizabeth Bunin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

Many water-stressed regions of the globe have a highly seasonal precipitation regime. However, seasonality in the past and under changing climates is little studied. Submonthly records of sclerochronological δ 18 O and δ 13 C values of Melanopsis shells from the Jordan River Dureijat archaeological site (JRD) in the upper Jordan River valley presented here document the hydrology of paleo-Lake Hula. These records were assessed for changes in seaso…

  • Late glacial and Holocene climate in the Kunlun Pass region (northern Tibetan Plateau) inferred from a multi-proxy lake record

Open Access•Wanyi Zhang, Steffen Mischke et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2023

Holocene environmental and climate change on the Tibetan Plateau is intensively studied and discussed with the aim to better understand the factors controlling the hydrology of individual river catchments and especially the availability of water which is of utmost significance for the communities downstream in times of rapid climate change. Thus, a late glacial and Holocene sediment record from Lake Heihai in the Kunlun-Pass region was investigat…

  • Late Holocene hydroclimatic history of the Galilee Mountains from sedimentary records of the Sea of Galilee, Israel

Open Access•Abigail Williams, Emi Ito et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

Detrital sediments of the Sea of Galilee are predominantly pedogenic products of settled dust and local bedrocks transported from Upper Galilee and the Golan Heights. Using the mineralogy, chemistry, and Nd and Sr isotope ratios of the core LK12-22 collected offshore of the Ginosar valley and of contemporaneous soils from the Nahal Tzalmon and Nahal Amud catchments, we reconstructed Late Holocene regional hydroclimate. The core samples span ɛ Nd …

  • Socio-Environmental Dynamics along the Historical Silk Road

Open Access•Hans‐Rudolf Bork, Liang Emlyn Yang et al.•BOOK•Socio-Environmental Dynamics…•2019

This open-access book discusses socio-environmental interactions in the middle to late Holocene, covering areas along the ancient Silk Road regions. It offers insights from various disciplinary perspectives, such as archaeology, paleoclimatology, historical geography, agriculture, art, and literacy

  • Holocene climate and landscape change in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau foreland inferred from the Zhuyeze Lake record

    Open Access•Steffen Mischke, Zhongping Lai et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Referências: 11

Pollen and grain-size data from the Holocene Zhuyeze Lake record in arid Central Asia were re-assessed and combined with new ostracod species assemblage data to improve inferences of the lake history and controlling climate conditions. Zhuyeze Lake was a perennial freshwater–oligohaline lake since its establishment ca. 13 cal. ka BP. The lake level fell below the position of the QTL02 section site at 2.1 cal. ka BP after the beginning of the Han …

  • Geological setting and age of the Middle Paleolithic site of Nahal Mahanayeem Outlet (Upper Jordan Valley, Israel)

Johannes Kalbe, Gonen Sharon et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

  • What drives the recent intensified vegetation degradation in Mongolia – Climate change or human activity

    Open Access•Fang Tian, Ulrike Herzschuh et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

This study examines the course and driving forces of recent vegetation change in the Mongolian steppe. A sediment core covering the last 55 years from a small closed-basin lake in central Mongolia was analyzed for its multi-proxy record at annual resolution. Pollen analysis shows that highest abundances of planted Poaceae and highest vegetation diversity occurred during 1977–1992, reflecting agricultural development in the lake area. A decrease i…

  • Late glacial vegetation and climate oscillations on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau inferred from the Lake Naleng pollen profile

Open Access•Annette Kramer, Ulrike Herzschuh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

We present a late glacial pollen record (17,700 to 8500 cal yr BP) from a Lake Naleng sediment core. Lake Naleng is located on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (31.10°N 99.75°E, 4200 m) along the upper tree-line. Variations in the summer monsoon are evident from shifts in vegetation that correspond to late glacial climate trends from other monsoon-sensitive regions. Alpine steppe was recorded between 17,700 and 14,800 cal yr BP, indicating low ef…

  • An ostracod-inferred large Middle Pleistocene freshwater lake in the presently hyper-arid Qaidam Basin (NW China)

  • Quantitative climate and vegetation trends since the late glacial on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau deduced from Koucha Lake pollen spectra

Open Access•Ulrike Herzschuh, Annette Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Quantitative information on vegetation and climate history from the late glacial–Holocene on the Tibetan Plateau is extremely rare. Here, we present palynological results of a 4.30-m-long sediment record collected from Koucha Lake in the Bayan Har Mountains, northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Vegetation change has been traced by biomisation, ordination of pollen data, and calculation of pollen ratios. The application of a pollen–climate calibration se…

  • Temperature variability and vertical vegetation belt shifts during the last ∼50,000 yr in the Qilian Mountains (NE margin of the Tibetan Plateau, China)

Open Access•Ulrike Herzschuh, Harald Kürschner et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

A 13.94-m-long sediment core, collected from a medium-sized lake in the Qilian Mountains (NE Tibetan Plateau, China), was analysed palynologically at 81 horizons. The interpretation of indicator taxa yielded various vertical shifts of the vegetation belts. These palaeovegetation results have been checked with lake surface pollen spectra from 8 lakes representing different altitudinal vegetation belts. Our main findings are the following: A short …
