The Indian Summer Monsoon from a Speleothem δ18O Perspective—A Review
As one of the most prominent seasonally recurring atmospheric circulation patterns, the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) plays a vital role for the life and livelihood of about one-third of the global population. Changes in the strength and seasonality of the ASM significantly affect the ASM region, yet the drivers of change and the varied regional responses of the ASM are not well understood. In the last two decades, there were a number of studies rec…
Comparison of 14 C and U-Th Ages in Corals from Iodp #310 Cores Offshore Tahiti
Shallow-water tropical corals can be used to calibrate the radiocarbon timescale. In this paper, we present a new data set based on the comparison between 14 C ages and U-Th ages measured in fossil corals collected offshore the island of Tahiti during the Integrated Oceanic Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 310. After applying strict mineralogical and geochemical screening criteria, the Tahiti record provides new data for 2 distinct time windows…
Calcium Isotopes in Juvenile Milk‐consumers
The calcium isotope ratios (δ 44/42 Ca) in milk‐consuming infants and juveniles are compared to adults at two archaeological sites to test whether milk consumption is detectable in the skeleton using calcium isotopes. At Aşıklı Höyük, δ 44/42 Ca is correlated with δ 15 N and differs significantly between juveniles and adults, suggesting that δ 44/42 Ca is responding to dietary milk input. However, at Christ Church, Spitalfields, no correlation be…
Tropical seagrass meadows modify seawater carbon chemistry
Highly productive tropical seagrasses often live adjacent to or among coral reefs and utilize large amounts of inorganic carbon. In this study, the effect of seagrass productivity on seawater carbonate chemistry and coral calcification was modelled on the basis of an analysis of published data. \nPublished data (11 studies, 64 records) reveal that seagrass meadows in the Indo-Pacific have an 83% chance of being net autotrophic, resulting in an av…
Calcium isotopes in archaeological bones and their relationship to dairy consumption
Quantification of Holocene Asian monsoon rainfall from spatially separated cave records
Late Pleistocene Human Skull from Hofmeyr, South Africa, and Modern Human Origins
The lack of Late Pleistocene human fossils from sub-Saharan Africa has limited paleontological testing of competing models of recent human evolution. We have dated a skull from Hofmeyr, South Africa, to 36.2 ± 3.3 thousand years ago through a combination of optically stimulated luminescence and uranium-series dating methods. The skull is morphologically modern overall but displays some archaic features. Its strongest morphometric affinities are w…
