  • Impact of Gingivitis on Circulating Neutrophil Reactivity and Gingival Crevicular Fluid Inflammatory Proteins

Open Access•Helen M Roberts, Zehra Yonel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Gingivitis is an extremely common oral inflammatory condition and can be induced in humans using an acute 21-day experimental gingivitis model. Neutrophils are known to be highly prevalent in the gingival crevice during gingival inflammation; however, the effect of gingivitis and the associated biofilm on peripheral blood neutrophils (PBN) is not well characterised. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the impact of inflammation induced by …

  • Paleo-Enso influence on African environmentsand early modern humans

    Stefanie Kaboth‐bahr, William D Gosling et al.•PREPRINT•2022•Cited by: 1

lt;p>In this study, we synthesize terrestrial and marine proxy records, spanning the past 620,000 years, to decipher pan-African climate variability and its drivers and potential linkages to hominin evolution. We find a tight correlation between moisture availability across Africa to El Niño Southern Ocean oscillation (ENSO) variability, a manifestation of the Walker Circulation, that was most likely driven by changes in Earth’s eccentricity. Our…

  • Approaches and challenges to the study of loess—Introduction to the LoessFest Special Issue

    Open Access•Randall J Schaetzl, E Arthur Bettis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

In September 2016, the annual meeting of the International Union for Quaternary Research’s Loess and Pedostratigraphy Focus Group, traditionally referred to as a LoessFest, met in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. The 2016 LoessFest focused on “thin” loess deposits and loess transportation surfaces. This LoessFest included 75 registered participants from 10 countries. Almost half of the participants were from outside the United States, and 18 of the pa…

  • Identification of a Kulshan caldera correlative tephra in the Palouse loess of Washington State, northwest USA

    Open Access•Georgina E King, Nicholas J G Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

The Kulshan caldera formed at ∼1.15 Ma on the present-day site of Mt. Baker, Washington State, northwest USA and erupted a compositionally zoned (dacite-rhyolite) magma and a correlative eruptive, the Lake Tapps tephra. This tephra has previously been described, but only from the Puget Lowland of NW Washington. Here an occurrence of a Kulshan caldera correlative tephra is described from the Quaternary Palouse loess at the Washtucna site (WA-3). S…

  • Developing a framework of Quaternary dune accumulation in the northern Rub' al-Khali, Arabia

    Open Access•Andrew R Farrant, Geoff A T Duller et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015

  • Climatic variability, plasticity, and dispersal: A case study from Lake Tana, Ethiopia

Open Access•M La Grove, Henry Lamb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2015•Cited by: 22•References: 141

  • Chronology and provenance of last-glacial (peoria) loess in western iowa and paleoclimatic implications

    Open Access•Daniel R Muhs, E Arthur Bettis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Geologic archives show that the Earth was dustier during the last glacial period. One model suggests that increased gustiness (stronger, more frequent winds) enhanced dustiness. We tested this at Loveland, Iowa, one of the thickest deposits of last-glacial-age (Peoria) loess in the world. Based on K/Rb and Ba/Rb, loess was derived not only from glaciogenic sources of the Missouri River, but also distal loess from non-glacial sources in Nebraska. …

  • Worked examples of alternative methods for the synthesis of qualitative and quantitative research in systematic reviews

Open Access•Patricia J Lucas, Jennifer Baird et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medical Research Methodology•2007

  • Reconstruction of Holocene foreland progradation using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating: An example from Dungeness, UK

    Open Access•Helen M Roberts, A J Plater et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 12

Dungeness Foreland, southeast UK, is comprised of a series of distinctive gravel ridges overlying sub- and intertidal sands. The successful application of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) to the Holocene sub- and intertidal sands at Dungeness provides a well-resolved chronology (precision ~5%) for exploring the sedimentary response of a gravel foreland to changes in sea level, storms, sediment supply and coastal dynamics. The nature of for…

  • Unprecedented last-glacial mass accumulation rates determined by luminescence dating of loess from western Nebraska

    Open Access•Helen M Roberts, Daniel R Muhs et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

A high-resolution chronology for Peoria (last glacial period) Loess from three sites in Nebraska, midcontinental North America, is determined by applying optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to 35–50 μm quartz. At Bignell Hill, Nebraska, an OSL age of 25,000 yr near the contact of Peoria Loess with the underlying Gilman Canyon Formation shows that dust accumulation occurred early during the last glacial maximum (LGM), whereas at Devil’s…
