  • The Orientation of Romanesque Marian Churches in Soria (Spain)

    J M Abril-Hernández•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2024

This work studies orientations of 150 parish churches with Marian dedications in the province of Soria, Spain, grouped into subsamples according to Romanesque chronology and dedication to the Marian advocation of the Assumption. The hypothesis of observing local sunrise for aligning churches versus solem orientem during a restricted Romanesque working calendar (i.e. excluding winter and harvest-time) is assessed via a large number of simulated pr…

  • Alignment Patterns of Romanesque Churches Dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption in Soria, Spain

    J M Abril-Hernández, Jerónimo Sánchez Velasco•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2023•References: 7

Previous studies have reported that in southern Spain some medieval churches are aligned to sunrise on the canonical equinox, independent of their dedication, and to sunrise on 15th August, for dedications to the Virgin of the Assumption. This paper aims to identify precedents of this tradition in the province of Soria (northeast Spain), where the campaign by Christians to recapture territory held by the Muslims was accomplished in the first thir…

  • Analysis of Structures’ Orientations in Archaeoastronomy

    J M Abril-Hernández•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In the scope of archaeoastronomy, the analysis of a large number of structures through the frequency histograms for their azimuths and declinations can identify singular patterns of orientation. Conclusions often rely on qualitative assessments. Quantitative assessments have been proposed by using as null hypothesis a pure random distribution of azimuths over the 360o horizon. In some cases, such as orientation of Christian churches, the histogra…

  • Orientation of Gothic-Mudéjar Churches in Southern Spain

    J M Abril-Hernández•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Most of the earliest new churches built in Andalusia (southern Spain) following the thirteenth-century Christian Reconquista occupied the sites of former mosques. In some cases, these churches incorporated pre-existing architectonic elements – particularly minarets, which were converted into bell towers – or took some inspiration from Islamic architecture, creating a combination of Gothic style and elements from Muslim architecture known as Gothi…

  • Archaeoastronomical Study on the Iberian-Roman Sanctuary of Torreparedones (Baena, Spain)

    J M Abril-Hernández, José Antonio Morena-López•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2018•References: 5

The physical organisation of sanctuaries at Iberian-Roman archaeological sites have societal-spiritual aspects that are not always fully understood, but which become clearer when astronomical factors are taken into consideration. The current research studies Temple B (first century AD) in the Iberian-Roman sanctuary of Torreparedones (Baena, Spain). This temple is surrounded by the Jabalcuz and Ahíllo mountain peaks which, respectively, closely m…

  • Evidence of Churches Aligned to the Sun on the Patron Saint’s Day in Southern Spain after the Twelfth Century

    J M Abril-Hernández•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This work studies the alignment of churches in southern Spain after the twelfth century. It merges the statistical analysis from a wide survey with the case study of Bujalance. In this area, the alignment of the parish churches of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Francis of Assisi (both from the early sixteenth century) accurately fit to the sunrise and sunset on their respective feast days. A systematic survey included all the parish churches w…
