  • Declining glaciers endanger sustainable development of the oases along the Aksu-Tarim River (Central Asia)

Open Access•Tobias Bolch, Doris Duethmann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Tarim River basin is the largest endorheic river basin in China. Due to the extremely arid climate the water supply solely depends on water originating from the glacierised mountains with about 75% stemming from the transboundary Aksu River. The water demand is linked to anthropogenic (specifically agriculture) and natural ecosystems, both competing for water. Ongoing climate change significantly impacts the cryosphere. The mass balance of the gl…

  • Surging dynamics of South Rimo Glacier, Eastern Karakoram

Open Access•Zongli Jiang, Kunpeng Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Describing the dynamic characteristics of glacier surge events is a precursor to being able to understand their driving mechanisms. Here, a comprehensive suite of surface velocities and surface elevation changes for the surging South Rimo Glacier (SRG), situated in the East Karakoram region, are obtained by offset-tracking from Sentinal-1A and geodetic method from TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 Advanced Topogra…

  • Distribution and interannual variability of supraglacial lakes on debris-covered glaciers in the Khan Tengri-Tumor Mountains, Central Asia

Open Access•Qiao Liu, Liu Qiao et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

Supraglacial lakes are widely formed on debris-covered glaciers in the Khan Tengri-Tumor Mountains (KTTM), Tianshan, Central Asia. Study of their distribution characters based on regional-wide remote sensing investigations is still lacking, but it can promote our understanding about the influence of supraglacial lakes on the surface melting, hydrology and dynamics of debris-covered glaciers in this region. This study presents results of the supra…

  • Quaternary glaciations and glacial landform evolution in the Tailan River valley, Tianshan Range, China

Open Access•Jingdong Zhao, Jie Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015

  • Changes of glacial lakes and implications in Tian Shan, central Asia, based on remote sensing data from 1990 to 2010

Open Access•Xin Wang, Yongjian Ding et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

Changes of glacial lakes and implications were assessed for the Tian Shan Mountains from 1990 to 2010, based on Landsat Thematic Mapper/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus images. The total area of glacial lakes has expanded greatly over the last 20 years, at an average rate of 0.69 ± 0.12 km ^2 a ^−1 or 0.8 ± 0.1% a ^−1 . Eastern Tian Shan contributed nearly half that increase (≈0.34 ± 0.03 km ^2 a ^−1 ), followed by northern Tian Shan at 0.17 ± 0.03 …

  • Using Remote Sensing Data to Quantify Changes in Glacial Lakes in the Chinese Himalaya

Open Access•Xin Wang, Wang Xin et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2012

To assess changes in glacial lakes in the Chinese Himalaya, 2 inventory phases were conducted on the basis of 278 aerial survey topography maps from the 1970s and 38 Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) images from the 2000s. In the past 30 years, the number of glacial lakes has decreased, from 1750 to 1680 (a decrease of 4.0%), whereas the average area of glacial lakes expanded from 166.48 to 215.28 km2 (an incr…

  • Assessment and Simulation of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods for Longbasaba and Pida Lakes, China

Open Access•Xin Wang, Wang Xin et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2008

Longbasaba and Pida lakes are two moraine-dammed lakes located at the headwaters of the Geiqu River, a tributary of the Pumqu River in the Chinese Himalayas, at an elevation of about 5700 m. The minimum distance between the two lakes is 24 m and their difference in elevation is about 76 m. Breach risks were assessed on the basis of field surveys carried out in the summers of 2004, 2005, and 2006. Empirical formulae for breaching of moraine dams a…
