The Provenance of Silver in the Viking‐Age Hoard From Bedale, North Yorkshire
The acquisition of silver was a key motive propelling the Viking expansion out of Scandinavia; identifying the sources of Viking silver during the early part of the Viking Age can provide critical insights into the relative significance of western European and eastern, Islamic wealth in the Viking expansion. Here, we present new lead isotope and trace element analyses of silver ingots and rings contained in the late ninth‐ /early tenth‐century ho…
The Use of Pb Isotope Ratios to Determine Environmental Sources of High Blood Pb Concentrations in Children
The incidence of lead (Pb) poisoning in children in Georgia has been identified as a major health concern, with a recent national survey identifying that 41% of children aged 2-7 years had blood lead concentrations (BLCs) greater than the blood lead reference value (BLRV) of ≥5 μg dL -1 . This study collected samples of blood, spices, paint, soil, dust, flour, tea, toys, milk, and water from 36 households in Georgia where a child had previously b…
West Pans
Excavations were undertaken in 1981 and 1990–1 at the site of the 18th-/19th-century ceramicsmanufacturing complex of West Pans, near Musselburgh. Several puddling pits, most of themquite small, were identified, as was part of a hovel (the circular structure surrounding a kiln) andthe remains of two kilns, one of which might have been for gla…
