  • Westward expansion of pearl millet agriculture into the Lac de Guiers basin, Senegal, by c. AD 200

  • Investigating the potential of oxygen-isotope records from anthropogenic lakes as tracers of 20th century climate change

    Open Access•J Tindall, J Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 4

Historical climate change in southern England was investigated using ostracod oxygen-isotope (δ 18 O) records from two anthropogenic lakes in Hampshire, southern England. A strong relationship is observed between δ 18 O ostracod , δ 18 O precipitation and δ 18 O lake_water in the contemporary environment and therefore δ 18 O ostracod from the sedimentary record of these systems has the potential to reflect past climate variability. The possibilit…

  • A 1 Ma sea surface temperature record from the North Atlantic and its implications for the early human occupation of Britain

    Open Access•Ian Candy, Montserrat Alonso‐García et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

The British Quaternary sequence has an exceptionally rich record of Palaeolithic archaeology up to 1 Ma. In this study, we reinvestigate foraminifera-based sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructions from the two marine core records (Ocean Drilling Program Site 980 and M23414) that are most relevant to the climatic history of the British Isles, consequently allowing the evolution of SST over the past 1 Ma to be studied. This is then compared wi…

  • A chronology of alluvial fan response to Late Quaternary sea level and climate change, Crete

    Open Access•Richard Pope, Richard J J Pope et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

To better understand how fluvial systems respond to late Quaternary climatic forcing OSL and U-series dating was applied to stratigraphically significant sedimentary units within a small ( 2 ) alluvial fan system (the Sphakia fan) in southwest Crete. The resultant chronology (comprising 32 OSL and U-series ages) makes Sphakia fan one of the best dated systems in the Mediterranean and suggests that Cretan fans responded to climate in two ways. Fir…

  • Coupled micromorphological and stable isotope analysis of Quaternary calcrete development

Open Access•Kathryn Adamson, Ian Candy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Pedogenic calcretes are widespread in arid and semi-arid regions. Using calcrete profiles from four river terraces of the Rio Alias in southeast Spain, this study explores the potential of using detailed micromorphological and stable isotopic analysis to more fully understand the impacts of Quaternary environmental change on calcrete development. The four profiles increase in carbonate complexity with progressive age, reflecting calcretisation ov…

  • Climatic control on palaeohydrology and cyclical sediment distribution in the Plio-Quaternary deposits of the Guadix Basin (Betic Cordillera, Spain)

  • Stable oxygen isotopic composition of mollusc shell carbonate as a proxy for summer river water temperature

    Open Access•Ian Candy•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • The Cyrenaican Prehistory Project 2010

    Open Access•G Barker, Annita Antoniadou et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2010•Cited by: 19•References: 14

The paper reports on the fourth (2010) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project, and on further results of analyses of artefacts and organic materials collected in the 2009 season. Ground-based LiDar has provided both an accurate 3D scan of the Haua Fteah cave and information on the cave's morphometry or origins. The excavations in the cave focussed on Middle Palaeolithic or Middle Stone Age ‘Pre-Aurignacian’ layers below the base…

  • The Cyrenaican Prehistory Project 2009

    Open Access•G Barker, Annita Antoniadou et al.•ARTICLE•Libyan Studies•2009•Cited by: 16•References: 11

The paper reports on the third (2009) season of fieldwork of the Cyrenaican Prehistory Project, and on further results from the analysis of materials collected in the previous (2007 and 2008) fieldwork. Sediments in a 14 m-deep core drilled beside the McBurney trench provide an invaluable overview of the overall stratigraphic sequence, including at depths reached by the 1950s Deep Sounding but not yet investigated by the present project. Sampling…

  • U-series isochron dating of immature and mature calcretes as a basis for constructing Quaternary landform chronologies for the Sorbas basin, southeast Spain

Open Access•Ian Candy, Stuart Black et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Immature and mature calcretes from an alluvial terrace sequence in the Sorbas basin, southeast Spain, were dated by the U-series isochron technique. The immature horizons consistently produced statistically reliable ages of high precision. The mature horizons typically produced statistically unreliable ages but, because of linear trends in the dataset and low errors associated with each data point, it was still possible to place a best-fit isochr…

  • Excavations at the Lower Palaeolithic site at Elveden, Suffolk, UK

Open Access•Nick Ashton, Simon Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2005•Cited by: 49•References: 13

The Lower Palaeolithic site at Elveden, Suffolk, was the subject of new excavations from 1995–1999. Excavations around the edge and in the centre of the former clay-pit revealed sediments infilling a lake basin that had formed in Lowestoft till, overlying Chalk, the till being attributed to the Anglian glaciation (MIS 12). The lake sediments contain pollen that can be assigned to pollen zones HoI and HoIIa of the early Hoxnian (MIS 11). Overlying…
