  • Testing the sensitivity of geophysical proxies for climate reconstructions along a narrow precipitation gradient in the Middle Danube Basin

Open Access•Mathias Vinnepand, Christian Laag et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Climate oscillations may strongly modify continental precipitation and temperature patterns, therefore understanding their history is relevant for comprehending effects of past and ongoing climate changes. For this purpose, temperature and precipitation reconstructions beyond the instrumental record are extremely useful. As widespread terrestrial archives, loess–paleosol sequences are viable targets for such analyses. Consequently, cost-efficient…

  • Aeolian dynamics at the northern edge of Deliblato (Banat) Sand Sea, Vojvodina, Serbia, at the time of the last deglaciation

    Open Access•Rastko S Marković, Zoran M Perić et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

The Deliblato (Banat) Sand Sea, which is one of the largest areas of аeolian sand in Europe, is located near the Iron Gate, which marks the crossing of the Danube River through the biggest gorge of this river. Here, Danubian alluvium has served as the sand source for the Banat Sand Sea, which was formed primarily through southeasterly (Košava) winds. Utilizing a multi-proxy approach, the objective of this study is to gain a better understanding o…

  • A Glacial–Interglacial Malacofauna Record from the Titel Loess Plateau, Serbia, between ~350 and 250 ka

Open Access•Milica G Radaković, Bojan Gavrilovic et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2024

We present data on molluscan fauna within the L3 loess unit (and partially within the S3 paleosol) from the key loess section of Veliki Surduk in Serbia. The section correlates to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 8 and late MIS 9 and, thus, spans the time frame from ~350 to 250 ka. The Veliki Surduk loess–paleosol sequence (LPS) is located on the northwestern margin of the Titel loess plateau and comprises ~30 m of sediments. Our focus is on a 5.4 m th…

  • Local Differentiation in the Loess Deposition as a Function of Dust Source: Key Study Novo Orahovo Loess Paleosol Sequence (Vojvodina, Serbia)

    Open Access•Slobodan B Marković, J Vandenberghe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2023

Typical patterns of the Late Pleistocene loess–paleosol units are preserved in the Novo Orahovo brickyard, Northern Serbia. Presented preliminary luminescence chronology supports the chronostratigraphic interpretations of global isotopic marine climate reconstructions. Magnetic susceptibility and sedimentological evidence exhibit general similarities with the marine oxygen-isotope stratigraphy. These records provide new insights into the dust acc…

  • Late Pleistocene and Holocene aeolian activity in the Deliblato Sands, Serbia

    Open Access•György Sipos, Slobodan B Marković et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The Deliblato Sands is among the largest uniform dune fields of Europe, with a very pronounced topography reflecting extensive past aeolian events. Although lacking numerical age data, previous researchers have hypothesized various periods of dune formation. Our research goals were to map the main morphological units of the Deliblato Sands, and to provide the first optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages for the major dune types. Mapping was…

  • Initial quartz OSL and dust mass accumulation rate investigation of the Kisiljevo loess sequence in north-eastern Serbia

    Open Access•Zoran M Perić, Slobodan B Marković et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Late Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence at the Belovo section, south of Western Siberia, Russia: Preliminary results

    Open Access•Valentina S Zykina, Vladimir S Zykin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Geomorphological evolution of the Petrovaradin Fortress Palaeolithic site (Novi Sad, Serbia)

    Open Access•Slobodan B Marković, J Vandenberghe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Two phases of archaeological investigation were performed in the Novi Sad City Museum at Petrovaradin Fortress. In this study, we summarize the results of geo-archaeological investigations of the second period of excavation inside the Novi Sad City Museum building. The fortress is situated on a Danube terrace with the top of the bedrock at ca.123 m asl. The investigated section consists of undisturbed fine-sandy silt. The grain-size distribution …

  • Mineral magnetic properties of loess–paleosol couplets of northern Serbia over the last 1.0 Ma

Open Access•N Namier, Xinbo Gao et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

We conducted the first detailed mineral magnetic investigation of more than nine loess–paleosol couplets of the composite Titel-Stari Slankamen loess section in Serbia, which provides one of the longest and most complete terrestrial record of paleoclimatic changes in Europe since ~1.0 Ma. The results show that the ferrimagnetic mineral assemblage of the loess units is dominated by partially oxidized multidomain (MD) and pseudo-single domain (PSD)…
