First Steps Towards an Interactive Real-time Hazard Management Simulation
This paper reports on the construction and initial testing of a computer-based interactive flood hazard management simulation, designed for undergraduates taking an applied geomorphology course. Details of the authoring interface utilized to create the simulation are presented. Students act as the managers of civil defence utilities in a fictional town, and have to respond to changes in local conditions to prevent a flood disaster. An SMS messagi…
A Younger Dryas Icecap in the Equatorial Andes
Morphologic and stratigraphic evidence shows that a late-glacial ice cap existed on part of the Eastern Cordillera of Ecuador (Lat. 0° 20′ S) on ground with a mean elevation of 4200 m where none exists now. An outlet glacier from an ca. 800 km 2 ice cap terminated at 3850 m altitude in the Papallacta valley on the eastern side of the plateau. Radiocarbon dates show that moraines formed by this advance were ice-free by 13,200 14 C yr B.P. Tephras …
Four short cists from north-east Scotland and Easter Ross
Excavations at Castlehill of Strachan, 1980-1
A typical northern motte had a timber hall on the summit, two phases of palisade, surrounding ditch and approach causeway. The 13th century landscape was reconstructed using geomorphology and air photography. Coins, pottery of c 1250 to early 14th. Three furnaces/ovens were set on reused millstones. Metalwork, animal bones, pottery, palaeobotany
The Late-Glacial History of the Firth of Clyde: A Reply
The 'flaws' in the paper by Gemmell (I973) commented on by Gray are examined and assessed. A close reappraisal of the results obtained in Arran using Andrews's (1970) nomogram is carried out, particular attention being paid to the assumptions of a reference level dated at 5500 years B.P. and of a continuous uplift since c. 13 500 years B.P. The probable errors resulting from these assumptions are suggested to be of a maximum size of 600-700 years…
The Deglaciation of the Island of Arran, Scotland
The use of a nomogram constructed by J. T. Andrews (I970) has allowed an approximate chronology of deglaciation to be established for the Island of Arran. The last ice cover of the area began to build up about 25 000 years BP, and reached a maximum about 18 000 BP, after which a retreat began. It is thought that the Aberdeen- Lammermuir readvance and the Perth readvance were not major readvances but stillstands or minor oscillations of the ice fr…
