Climate-driven depopulation and adaptation realities in America’s coastal ground zero
The Flooding of Lagash (Iraq): Evidence for Urban Destruction Under Lugalzagesi, the King of Uruk and Umma
High‐resolution remote sensing, magnetometry, and trench stratigraphy identify a significant flood event at Lagash (modern Tell al‐Hiba) during the late Early Dynastic period (ca. 2400–2350 BC ). Satellite imagery and magnetometry reveal a 90‐meter‐wide meander belt—3–15 times broader than documented canals—adjacent to primary temple districts. Test trenches further exposed over one meter of flood‐deposited silt covering existing architecture. Op…
Land-use change as a major driver for mid-20th-century flood intensity reduction in the Southeastern US
Land-use changes affect hydrologic processes, but their impact on flooding remains obscure amid increasingly heavy precipitation. Instrumental records are short relative to land-use change history and inadequate for flood attribution studies. Here we integrate a high-resolution paleodischarge record spanning the past ∼200 years from the largest basin in the Southeastern United States with instrumental data and hydrological modeling. We find that …
The mid-Holocene sea-level change in the Arabian Gulf
The mid-Holocene sea-level highstand is a well-known phenomenon in sea-level science, yet the knowledge on the highstand’s spatial and temporal distribution remains incomplete. Here we study the southwest coast of the Arabian-Persian Gulf where a mid-Holocene sea-level highstand and subsequent sea-level fall may have occurred due to the Earth crustal response to meltwater load. Sea-level indicators were established using standard facies analysis …
Paleodischarge reconstruction using oxbow lake sediments complicated by shifting hydrological connectivity
Alluvial sedimentary records attract great attention for quantitative paleoflood studies because they may preserve continuous high-resolution archives in lowland floodplains that are most vulnerable to inland flooding. The coarse-grained flood deposit in oxbow lakes emerges as a promising paleoflood proxy due to its sensitivity to flood magnitude and high preservation potential. Previous work has established a coarseness-discharge correlation for…
No evidence from the eastern Mediterranean for a MIS 5e double peak sea-level highstand
To understand past and future sea-level variability, it is important to know if during an interglacial the eustatic sea level is constant or oscillates by several meters around an average value. Several field sites within and outside the tropics have been interpreted to suggest such oscillations during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e (129–116 ka). Here, we present our analysis of one such non-tropical site, Hergla, where a facies succession …
Mississippian monumentality in the Yazoo Basin: Recent investigations at the Carson site (22CO505), northwestern Mississippi
Investigations at the Carson site (22CO505), located in Coahoma County, Mississippi, have uncovered data on the development of a large Mississippian mound center dating to the period from A.D. 1200 through European contact. Recent sediment coring, excavation, artifact analyses, and radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating shed light on earthworks and household structures at Carson, and on Mississippian culture in the Yazoo B…
Cluster of Human Infections with Avian Influenza A (H7N9) Cases: A Temporal and Spatial Analysis
Our results suggested that the spatial-temporal clustering of H7N9 in China between 2013 and 2014 is fundamentally different
Holocene environmental reconstruction of sediment-source linkages at Crummock Water, English Lake District, based on magnetic measurements
To reconstruct Lateglacial and Holocene environmental changes in the British uplands, two c. 5.8 m long sediment cores from Crummock Water (NW England), together with several hundred soil samples from the Crummock Water catchment, were studied using magnetic techniques. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating using fine silt quartz and 14 C dating of terrestrial plant macrofossils were used to establish a chronology for the lake sediments.…
